i bought a new pair of sony mdr-ex71sl headphones and i plugged it into my md player and i hear a noticeable hissing sound in the background. especially when there is a silence in the track, you really hear it. at first i thought it was just the consequence of atrac3 conversion so i then plugged my headphones into my cd player, where there should be no hissing coming from the music at least. i still hear that same hissing sound.

so does that mean my sony mdr-ex71sl headphones are defective? or is this a natural consequence of using digital earphones?

I have those headphones, and I have never heard of any hissing. Maybe it is from your md player. Try it on another medium and see if it happens. Hope it works out!

yea i tried it out on my cd player as well and i hear the same hissing.

could you try this out: use your headphones and listen carefully when you skip a track and before the music actually begins there usually is like a second pause and then the music begins. this is also where my hissing begins. try this out and tell me if you even hear a slight hissing. do you even hear any type of noise?

make sure that if the headphones have an external volume that it's not too loud. Set the external volume fairly low and turn up the main volume on your player. Or try turning down the main volume and turn up the headphone volume. Just play with it until the hissing dissapears. If your headphones have no volume control on the cord I think you got defective ones.
