I haven't gone to an Airport post-9/11...

Okay so I'm competing in WGI Percussion World Championships in Dayton Ohio. I'm leaving from Tampa, Florida on Thursday.

Our director is strongly discouraging checking in baggage. He's saying that we should only take a carry-on. Well, I need to pack quite a bit (for a guy) into one backpack. Here is a list of contents:

- Laptop w/ Charger
- Headphones for Laptop
- Normal Clothing for 3 days
- Huge Sweater (it will be cold in Dayton)
- Drumline Uniform (pants, top, shoes, shirt)
- Notebook (with music and other school stuff)
- Food (snacks for the airplane. No liquids.)

Back in the day, I wouldn't think twice about this... But now I have a few concerns. I was wondering if any seasoned travelers could give me some advice. These are my concerns:

- To fit all of that in my backpack, the backpack will be very poofy. I was thinking of just wearing my huge sweater onto the plane so that it's not in my bag, then put it in the bag later. Is this okay?
- I heard that they make you take off your shoes to get inspected. So should I place my extra uniform shoes in an easily accessible position in my bag to I can take them out, or do they only care about the shoes I'm wearing?
- Do I have to demonstrate that my laptop is actually a laptop? In other words, do I have to take it out and turn it on? I ask because my bag is going to be very packed.
- Is there any problem with taking food on an airplane? Like can I make some sandwiches and bring them in my bag? No liquids, of course.

Thanks in advance!

Yes this is okay.

They only care about what is on your feet.

Rarely do they make you turn it on. But they will make your take it out and put it in a separate bin.

I don't think you can take your own food through security check. But I do know you can bring food on the plane that you purchased at the airport past security check.

take laptop out of bag before putting through scanner thing

this, and only the shoes you are currently wearing need to be checked. Also I've seen alot of people get on planes with more than 1 carry on bag if that would help in your packing situation but I'd check with the airline first. I always just check a bag and carry on a bag, never had anything taken/lost.

1. Yeah, that's fine. You can even get away with carrying it on the plane by hand.
2. Yeah, just the ones you're wearing. Just take them off and toss them on the conveyor belt.
3. You have to take your laptop out and put it in a separate bin to get scanned on it's own, nothing more, nothing less.
4. I'd skip it. IDK if you can get through with food, but I haven't tried since the whole liquid BS started.

- You can wear your huge sweater, just expect to be asked to remove it when you go through security.
- You will only have to take off the shoes you're wearing at the time, as far as I know. I've never brought a second pair of shoes, though, so I'm not 100% sure.
- You will have to take the laptop out but you don't have to turn it on.

I have no idea what the food restrictions are. Other than sticking to dry food like crackers, candy, and mixed nuts/trail mix, I am not sure what to say. You may have to check with the airline.

You can have two carry ons - one that goes in the overhead bins, one that goes under your chair. I'd recommend putting your laptop and maybe things you'll want on the plane in a smaller bag of sorts - they can go under your seat & they'll be easier to access.

You know what he meant jackass.

You could carry the sweater with you, you'll probably want to put it on when you land anyway.
In my experience, I put the laptop in the plastic tote and slide it through the machine and that's it.
Make sure any liquids are in 3oz or less containers and are in a 1qt plastic bag that should be placed on top of your bag in the plastic tote. (this is for carry-on luggage only)

Good luck with the drumline! Looks really fun!

There's no problem bringing food thru security.

OP, why don't you bring a gym bag or small suitcase (usually roller style) so you don't have to fit everything into your backpack? Everybody brings a backpack plus another bag these days.

if you can't fit it all in one bag, I'd ditch the laptop and the snacks.

also, wear whatever your largest clothing objects are to leave more room in your bag.

or just F it and bring an additional bag to check.

Cold in Dayton? Its supposed to be upper 60 and low 70s by the end of the week in Dayton....oh wait you are from Tampa, I forgot anything less than <80F is freezing 😛

That's not a hard and fast rule by any means. Every airpot is different. I've had granola bars confiscated by Chicago airports that were fine through DIA airports.

OP: the only thing that might not be alright is food, and the worst that can happen there is they'll take it away. Pack it anyway and hope for the best.

Prepare to be searched.

And by that I mean your anal cavity. With both of his hands on your shoulders.

I don't know if I'd worry. I just flew 2 weeks ago and I would say there were no more than 1 out of every 5 people getting anally searched. Of course I was skipped so I went around and got back in line again.

I'd just check a bag. It's going to be exceedingly difficult to fit all that stuff in a single carry-on bag and have it still fit in the carry-on bin inside the plane.

Also, I take outside food (beef jerky, snack bars) with me on every flight I take. I've never been hassled about it.

Yeah... people from Florida have an entirely different idea of what cold is. I was down there last March in the Cape Coral/Ft. Myers area and it was about 70F or so in the morning. Me and my friend were walking around outside in shorts and t-shirts, and all the locals were walking around in jeans and winter jackets and had hats and gloves on. They looked at us like we were insane. 😛

I don't care what you say, 70F is NOT cold. 😛

Hey, raised in FL, 70F is not cold. I'm only comfortable around 60-70. Any warmer and I walk around outside buckey naked.

😕 Ignoring the fact that every single letter is placed as if it is the last letter in a word, AND is written left to right, that says:

Egyptian that security forces switched (subject/verb disagreement, verb is male, subject is female).

Plus, I want my 10 seconds back, I didn't get a loud noise or annoying flash or anything!
