I think all the hype over the bad drivers is way overrated.
I have yet to experience ONE of the mentioned 8800 bugs.
I'm using the Xtreme-G 97.44 driver (link).
I remember BFG10k saying that between the 97.02 and the 97.44 that they both sucked and the 97.02 just sucked less. Well I'm going to have to disagree.
Maybe it's my game selection but the drivers don't seem all that buggy to me.
My 8800GTS is running happily along at 650mhz on the core and 1025mhz (2050 ddr) on the vram.
I first uninstalled the old drivers (93.71). Then I did what it said to do in the x-bit article (link, in safe mode) and then I used driver cleaner pro (in safe mode). At this point I shut down and took out my 7900GT's and put in my 8800GTS (along with redoing my whole watercooling setup).
Booted up, installed the driver and ran into no problems at all. Didn't install ntune (cause I didn't have to), used Rivatuner to overclock and look at temps (never broke 45C yet to my knowledge, although I really don't look at the temp a lot.)
I use nHancer to change all the settings, and all the games (that I play) seem just fine. I had a little error in Oblivion but that was thanks to my memory overclock. Lowered it a little to 1025mhz (2050mhz ddr) and all is well.
People are complaining of not being able to set HDR+AA in Oblivion. Worked first try for me. I think they are having trouble because they simply are not installing the drivers correctly with Driver Cleaner Pro (plus the x-bit stuff).
I don't have Double Agent so I can't check that bug.
Besides that, no problems with the driver here.
Call it luck?
