i have yet again been amazed by the depths of human stupidity

so me and my wife split up a month ago, she moved to a different city. her grandmother, however, lives nearby and helps watch the kids a couple of days a week.

ive known her grandmother to be an idiot, shes good enough with the kids, at least i thought she was, after this im going to have to reconsider.

you see, i was talking to my ex tonight, because her grandmother cant watch the kids tomorrow as she usually does; this is because the sight in her right eye is almost completely gone.

she woke up around 7am and couldnt see out of her right eye, called to tell my ex this around 10am, and my ex wife said she should call a doctor immediately. you wouldnt expect someone to *need* this advice, but you would hope they would heed it and make the call. she didnt.

in fact she didnt call a doctor until almost 1:30pm...at which point the soonest appointment they have available is at 4. she gets there and he tells her its probably too late, and she wont be able to see out of it again, that it was cause by a blocked artery and her 2 pack a day smoking habit...that she enjoys in her apartment.

seriously, ive done some stupid things...and i wouldnt call a doctor immediate on say, a stiff neck or an ingrown toenail, but lack of vision would pretty well get my ass in gear. i need a new babysitter; i cannot trust such a moron with my kids any longer.

cliffs:

-ex's grandmother who watches my kids wakes up around 7, cant see out of right eye
-she calls ex at 10, ex says call a doctor
-moran grandmother calls at 1:30
-doctor said shes fvcked and wont be able to see out of it again
-i need a babysitter that isnt mentally retarded.

oh man.

yeah, vision is something you get taken care RIGHT NOW. between blocked arteries and detached retinas, there's just too much that can go wrong too fast to take any chances.

A friend of mine's brother woke up one morning with his right eye not working at all, and his left eye was also affected, but not that badly at that point. He calls his aunt, a retired DOCTOR, and she tells him to call someone or 911 and get to the ER ASAP, that this is bad, really bad.

HE GOES BACK TO SLEEP! "I thought she was just kidding!"

When he woke up, his left eye is almost as bad as the right one. He calls my friend, who calls an ambulance and they cart him to the hospital. He had some kind of an oddball anyuerism due to high blood pressure and an oddball artery formation, and after they took the top of his head off and went in and fixed it and removed the giant clot he had in there, he was/is permanently disabled. He has shadow vision (light/dark)on his right eye, and the left is pretty bad too. He can read, if he has his coke bottle glasses on, and he has it so bright it's painful to a normal person.

He was a cop for 15 years. He had to retire on disability at 37. Now, about 10 years later, he sits at home, alone, his wife took off aster it happened, she couldn't take his being miserable. Nobody in his family thinks badly that she left, he's that miserable. Most of his days are spent drinking Vodka, and just being miserable.

I had a side effect a few years ago to some medicine I was on and saw "flashes" when I moved my eyes quickly. I freaked out and went to the ER right away, for nothing, it turned out, but it's better to be safe than sorry..

You want stupid? Nephew of my parents' friends played Russian Roulette... with a semi-automatic pistol.

Didn't even die, amazingly enough. He was blinded, though.

Yes, as in, "the magazine spring pushes a round to the top, and a person chambers a round by pulling back on the slide and releasing it."

Basically, unless the semi-automatic pistol is a P.O.S. that is likely to misfeed when you try to chamber a round, you lose.

That's pretty fvcking stupid. I had pink eye earlier this summer, still dunno if it was allergy or bacteria based, but I remember being so scared that my eye was stuck shut some mornings. And when I had some rare form of strep, I was really scared I might permanently lose my voice. When sh1t goes wrong in my body, it goes seriously wrong, so I always jump to the worst conclusion and try to rectify the situation ASAP.

This always makes me

And I thought my parents not taking me serious about getting me to an optomitrist because I can't read stuff from across the room was bad. I need to pester them about it again. I'd go myself but I don't have the dough to pay for it, and have no idea who's medical insurance I'm under anymore.
