My motherboard supports up to 2200

Right now, 140 bucks for 2200, 100 bucks for 2100.

I do encode movies so that's a consideration. I should see a pretty decent improvement.

Would you?

No. Most guys are OC the 1600+ to at least 1743Mhz making it a 2200+ all for $52. Why waste the $, simply OC yours.

I don't get it. It runs hot as hell now!

I need my computer stable as well. I have 512 basic mushkin ram I don't know if it can take it.

What's hot? I run a $3 (the cheapest globalwin newegg sells) heatsink on the above OC and it never gets above 55C. On another machine I run a high dollar thermaltake ax7 with a $12 fan and it runs 43C tops. All Stable.

If you are gonna upgrade, at least wait until the Barton comes out. It will be on the A socket so all you will need to do is flash your Bios in order to get support for it (most likely). THen you can probably OC the barton to 3GHz if you play your cards right.

Anyway, a 1600+ OC'd to the speed of a 2200+ will run pretty much exactly the same temperature as a real 2200+. Oh and there's really not that much of a real-life difference between a 1700+ and a 2100+, probably only about 10%. Try the OC again and see if you really care.

How about just waiting for the thoroughbred revision B to be released in an 1800+? Then $70 or so will get you 2.1-2.2GHz.
