Same here. My wife has a company and has the .net domain because some idiot has the .com. It's been sitting at the "Coming Soon..." page through register.com for years but he wouldn't sell it because he had money invested in his branding of a sort of similar but not really name.

I tried to tell him that the site wasn't doing him any good since he wasn't even using it but he didn't quite seem to understand.

I wanted to get nakedfrog.com for quite some time... but for years, some guy owned it and basically did squat with it. I checked up on it on about a monthly basis... and then I must have missed out when it became available, because I checked it again, and it was a gay porn site.

In the time it's taken me to read all the dozens of posts below yours, I still haven't stopped laughing at this. Sorry man

sooooo, are you still checking up on the site on a monthly basis?

A monthly basis? Certainly not.

I have a long complicated Polish last name and some idiot in Las Vegas registered every last name in the phonebook.com and is selling them for $5000. Yeah, right.

I did that a while ago, followed by a higher lowball.

I'll think up another url. I should forget about this one.

you're about 10 years late to the party if you want a 3 letter .com domain

This reminds me of the story of the owner of the Dallas Mavericks. He made a site called broadcast.com with his college body for broadcasting sports games. Build up a lot of vistors and "clicks", then yahoo came along and gave him 10's of millions of dollars for it.

You meant billions, not 10's of millions. But whats a few orders of magnitude between friends?

i just bought DBL

I've been waiting for the day a 3 letter Anandtech screen name commands the same premium.

I sold tallbill.com for $200 a few months ago because I wasn't using it and now its completely unused. In only a few months it will be available again, and hopefully I'll snatch it back. I really want bobscott.com (my name) but some old guy in Florida owns it and barely uses it. Oh well, some day hopefully he'll grow tired of it.

That is where Cuban got the money to buy the Mavs, right?

I just checked my name.com and it was registered 2 days ago! The longer version of my name is still available though. Ex. Timothy instead of Tim.
