I have two job offers, HALP

Both of these offers kinda suck, my life sucks, deal with it.

Job one: drive a school bus for about 1k per month, start my day around 6am, done around 4pm, I've got 3 years experience with this and it should be a fairly easy job.

Job two: full time factory work, ten bucks per hour, start my day around 4am, done by 2pm.

Due to wild circumstances, I have to choose right now, and am only taking time to write this because I'm waiting for a call to be returned. The factory job is mine for the choosing, while bus driving is something I am almost guaranteed to get.

I'm going to talk to the transportation director to see if I can get a decision now. If he can't give me one now, I think I'm going to accept the factory work, because one in the hand beats two in the field. I think I would prefer the bus driving because it should be easier overall, would meet my financial obligations (and is actually a 60% increase over my current job), and I hate mornings. I've had to get up at 5am M-F before, and it was not pretty.

Thoughts?

Edit: made a decision, going with the factory. It might suck, but the bus people said to call if this doesn't work out. And, no matter what happens, either job will beat the hell out McDonald's.

Any benefits (insurance or retirement) with either? I'd do job 2 for sure, it pays twice as much and you're done earlier in the day.

easier work beats more money for me.

Is there opportunity for promotion in the factory job?

I think I'd go with the bus driver one. I prefer easier, and living a normal life rather than the vampire-style life you'd be living with the other job...but 1k a month is very low pay, hopefully your cost of living where you are is super cheap. Ahh, missouri, I guess it probably is.

damn sounds rough. 1k/mo is that after taxes or before? i'd definitely just take whichever one would net more money.

I'd much rather take the driving job, but I just spoke with the guy and he can't guarantee anything. I knew he wouldn't I just interviewed today, but it was worth a shot. So I told him I had to decline since I'd found full time work, and he told me to give him a call if it doesn't work out for me. Not a bad deal overall. So now I'm going to drive to the city and do some paperwork, get the background check started and all that.

I've been getting by on 600/month since I live with my parents. Life has been a bitch since April when my wife suddenly decided to call it quits. Whatever, I finally have a full time job again, it's a start.

Sucks. What kind of factory work?
@ 40 hrs/wk, that will gross about $1733/mo. (2080 hrs/year/12*$10)

Why the fuck would you want to drive a bus and put up with other people's kids for less money? Do your parents know you can't add? :p

Factory job is 10 hours a day I calculated (4AM-2PM, maybe he gets an hour for lunch). That is 10x5 = 50 hours a week, at $10/hr is $500 a week so $2000ish a month.

+1 for the factory job. More money and you don't have to deal with kids.

Factory.

School bus means dealing with little shits. They can do anything they want and probably get away with it. Watch out for the 30 video cameras on your bus too.

This although starting work at 4AM sucks. Eons ago I had to get up at 3AM every single freaking day for about 9 months, I don't miss that at all.

I was favoring driving over factory in large part because they were hiring for a kind of special needs route that comes with a complimentary kid wrangler, all I would have to do is drive.

Not sure what the factory makes, packaging I think?

Benefits didn't really factor in since the bus job is part time and the factory job is temp to hire. I've been strung along by temp to hire before, so I'm planning as though I never get promoted to a permanent position.

Yep...unless he works 4-10's...but at 50 hrs/wk, that'd be $2166/mo average. A GREAT improvement over the $1000/mo for driving school bus.

I did it for decades. The pluses are...less traffic on your way to work...and if you get off at "normal hours," you can still get things done during the normal business day.

However...I'm with you on one thing...I DO NOT miss getting up that early. Nowadays, I'm rarely asleep by then. :p

Both suck. Of the options, I'd take the factory work for sure. 12K is not enough to live very comfortably. 25K is also not enough to live very comfortably, but, it's a hell of a lot better than 12K.

Did you ever ask for or receive feedback from your past temp agency/their client on your job performance?

I'm assuming you were on time, didn't call in sick every other week, didn't steal anything, hard worker, etc.?

Since it's only presumably short term, the higher paying job is the much better deal.
Plus you can go to interviews for other (better) jobs after you finish at 2pm.

I didn't, because my treatment was nothing special. People were stuck at 9 an hour for a minimum of a year, and that was for the better workers. I did good work though, the other inspectors said so and I use one of them as a reference on applications.

You have a good point, even working at a grocery store as a courtesy clerk is better than McD's.

While you're at it, can you get me a Big Mac with extra pickles? Thanks :p

Get the one with the hottest co-workers.

Since the lesser-paying job is driving a school bus...this is more than appropriate:
