Can I be proficient in it in 24 hours?

I opened it up looked at it and it looks very easy

Didn't lie on an application.

Told the guy I'd learn Quickbooks and get tested on it but it was never on my resume.

Nothing to lose. I fail I fail. Big deal.

if you know basic accounting it's possible to be proficient enough to do basic tasks, but if you know nothing about accounting it won't figure it out for you...

Simple tasks are not that bad, if you already have a lot of accounting-related knowledge, QuickBooks will make a lot of sense.
If you don't have experience with accounting... it's gonna suck.

Can't be too hard. Do it systematically - learn how to enter transactions, how to total accounts, how to prepare trial balances, how to prepare financial statements. 24 hours should be more than enough.

I have to learn Peachtree this fall for a class, then Quickbooks next spring for a different class. (neither one is a "computerized accounting class" either. When I get to that class, the bastards will probably make me learn Abacus v3.0 or something. :D

its not bad. You have to setup your accounts first (assets, liabilities, accounts receivable, accounts payable etc.) This is the major part and you need to think here. Once this is fully setup, then you are only entering transactions and running reports.

Always remember, in accounting, money comes in from one place and goes to another place. So you should have 2 accounts for each transaction. You learn progressively as you move on.
