I am going to have to find some pictures of my parents old basement for you.

It's a old house when they got it and they did renovate it a lot as we were growing up but the old basement part is still the same and leaks during spring from all the melting snow or heavy rains and has a ton of old cobwebs.

I fucking hate crawl spaces. Had to do a lot of work in there when I was wiring the house for Ethernet/phone. I was sore for weeks from all the crouching, kneeling, crawling, etc... Fortunately I didn't see any spiders or other bugs, but that's probably cause I did it in winter. :hmm:

I actually just came out of my crawlspace, quick break from framing. I keep mine fairly tidy and I will be adding electrical outlets and dricore. Getting it spray foamed eventually. Though I do have a "sub cralwspace" under my garage that is more dirty, and it used to look like this:

I cleared all of those (believe it or not I have a phobia of spider webs, spiders I could not care less, but spider webs, yes) and added lighting, then got it spray foamed a few years back, so it looks like this now:

My main crawlspace:

How much did it cost for the spray in the crawlspace.

We bought the adjoining property last month, it has an older Brick house built in the 50's.
I crawled under a couple weeks ago to figure out some wire routing, water lines, etc. we want to change. (adding a 1/2 bath & upgrading the electric).
I was amazed how immaculately clean it was under there! The plastic moisture barrier can't be more than a couple years old, but what really impressed me most was to find that the Floor Joists were old, rough-sawn hardwood, full 2" x 10"!
IME, if the Floor Joists and Roof Trusses are old hardwood, the rest of the house likely is hardwood, and it will be almost indestructible!
Only thing I dislike about it is how cramped it is, 3' +-, I would prefer to have 4' minimum, but I'm not about to attempt to dig it out!

I have to be between the joist to roll over. Thankfully, don't have to go there often.

OP, rats...big, hungry, red assed RATS.

How much did it cost for the spray in the crawlspace.

Was around $1,500 if I recall. Not a cheap job, but sure beats cutting and gluing sheets of foam myself, and then hoping I actually did seal it off properly (Was getting air leakage given cement is porous). Made a pretty big difference. Before if I'd go near it, I would actually feel cold winter air. Now it's cool, but not actually cold. I used to get frost in there too. o_O

Last crawl space I was in, just a couple days ago, was one of the worst I've been in. Couldn't have been more than 1.5ft in most spots. Not easy installing duct work when you can't even roll over.

Makes you wonder why they build stuff like this. Is it that hard to dig the basement a little bit deeper to give more room or even make it a full basement? While you have an excavator may as well. Even my house which is a split level so half crawlspace half basement, why not just build it all on one level? I guess there's a technical reason behind it, or maybe it actually is a lot cheaper.

The space I was in wasn't dug, the house was just a couple feet off the dirt ground. It is a really old house being renovated.

I redone my crawl space last year, i rip out the old planks, put in solid plywood. Took out old insulation and put new r25s, vaccum all the spiders out, and put in vinyl plank floor on top of the plywood.. took a few months because there wasn't enough elbow room but once done, i got back 300sq ft of storage.. not much but its a lot :)

I would like to put lights in my crawlspace. Right now it only has 1 incandescent lamp, 100w I think. Thinking about putting in some linear T8's. I will need to take measurements of the space first to plug into lighting design software. :hmm:

Looks like I have a new project! :awe:

LED strip lighting. Do you really ever want to have to replace lights in the crawl space?

LED cost and performance are still lacking at this point.

Most of my house is now lit with LED and am very happy with it. Cost, yeah it's not down to the level of fluorescent or incandescent, but it's good enough. Especially considering the impact on my electric bill.

I always do my crawl space crawling in the dead of winter. All the spiders are tucked away then.

Bah...quit being a bunch of fucking nancy-boys and just go get the job done.

This am the US of A...it's not like we have human-eating bugs around here...and only a couple whose bite will bother you at all.

Sheesh...I'm surrounded by a bunch of fucking girls.

When I have to go into the crawl space to do work, I would set off a couple of bug bombs under there a day before I go in

I'm 99% sure im not gonna do anything but out of curiosity, am i allowed to stay in the house if i bug bomb the crawl space? Matters because there is an infant here. I doubt ill do it anyway, though. Probably just vacuum it up.

Your house probably isn't airtight, so no I wouldn't do that with a baby around.

And the USA has lethal bugs like black widows and brown recluse. While most bug related fears are irrational, some are legit.
