I'm only required to check i.d. Don't even have to get a copy but I do. I even "marry" people.I do copy their i.d.'s and send it in with the license, just in case....
I just go and get it done by Taco. "Dont compromise, Notarize!"
It really is pretty lax. I've been one since 1987 and have never had anyone question me about one.Ha...they sign/fingerprint a book. No copies of ID though.
Some ignorance in this thread.
It is $10 because it costs money to maintain your notary status with the state.
It costs money and time to take the classes and do the background checks to become a notary.
It costs money to get the notary supplies and renew your notary once it expires.
If you are a smart notary you have an E&O insurance policy which costs money.
My SO only notaries loan documents $200/pop, which works out to an extra 8-12K/yr for us on top of what we actually do in this office.
Seriously...notarized?
Why? I basically have to pay someone $10 to watch me sign, then have them stamp the paper?
This is an outrage!
How much stuff do you have to complain about on a daily basis?

So, you're saying that in your state, there are a lot of suckers willing to over pay for something that's free in all the other states? I'm in NY and have never heard of someone paying for the services of a notary. My lawyer's office has one, my accountant's office has one, there's one at my town hall, my school has one, my wife's company has one, the bank has one; they're all over the place. And, none of them charge a penny.

I will forgo my urge to be obscene here.My wife is a notary so I get mine done for free!!!!!

Waiting for the chorus "YOUR WIFE CAN"T NOTARIZE YOUR PAPERS!!!!!"
I know, I know. Sucks having a notary sleeping right next to you and you can't even utilize her "services"
Check with your Bank - They often have notarys on staff, and generally provide the service for free to their customers.
free at PNC with an account there.yep, free at my bank.
