Ah well in that case he fired himself, don't feel bad. If you gave the guy several chances to get it together and he still screws up its not your fault.

I hear you. But I gotta keep my sight on the big dollar signs at the end of the tunnel. Also, once you're in ownership, someone else gets to deal with the management BS. You get an entirely different plate of BS, with a side of cash.

Unfortunately, these types of people (all the probs with this guy, excuses,workmanship, etc) pretty much come with the territory when dealing with folks like painters, carpenters, etc.
You'll have a few good ones, but there'll always be a couple like him. Nice guys, usually, but just generally sorry-asses in one way or another.

I never had a problem with firing anyone, friendly or not.
I figure that a man knows what's expected of him. If he ain't gettin it, he knows it. He's just trying to milk what he can out of the employer as long as he can.
There's an underlying reason why his performance sucks. If you drop his ass, as he deserves, you'll be helping him to find it.
Do it with kindness. Don't say anything negative and don't get into an argument about his performance. When he goes to "I did a hell of a good job on this particular job and this particular job...", agree with him and point out how that will help him in the future.
Be consistantly positive and don't give him anything to be angry about and he'll pick someone else to be mad at until he finally realizes he has no one to blame but himself.
When you see him in passing, ask if he has found work and let him know you're concerned. Let him know about any jobs you may have heard of.
There's no reason why you can't continue to be friendly to him, even if he chooses to hate your guts.
If you let him go and actually care about him, that'll come across and he's not going to have hard feelings for you.

Damn sorry to hear that man.... One of life's nasty situations. He may be pissed at you, but deep down he's got to now you did the right thing. I've been in his situation. And I deserved it when I got fired.

Unfortunately, that's not my decision. I'm not paying him, the company is. I have to do what they tell me to do. I will let him know beforehand so that he can get something else lined up.

i always tell new people "i like to make work fun. we all joke and get along. but, if i have to babysit you, im the biggest asshole youll ever meet". its worked for the last 10 yrs., and ive fired more people than i wish ihad to. as long as you let people know theyre fvkin up and give them the chance to shape up, youve done all you can do. they know whos fault it is, and if they still blame you, what kind of friend can they really be?
