I have to be missing something. Upgraded from 4950 to 6950 Radeon and no improvement.

4gig memory

Fairly new corsair PS

*upgraded from a Radeon 4950 to 6950 2gb xfx*

(as best as I can remember, I am at work)

I wanted to get better fps playing world of warcraft, but i am seeing hardly any difference. When I got the new card I installed the proper drivers from AMD's site, rebooted, everything seems fine, i just get mediocre FPS (20-60 during the afternoon in org, not that busy and then it seems to chug in raids).

I have been out of the loop as far as PC upgrades for a couple years now, am I not installing the latest directx or something like that? I installed all drivers from abit's site, and other games run ok, but it feels like i am missing something. I reformatted a month ago. Any suggestions would be awesome, and forgive me for mistakes, its been a while.
I shelled out almost $300, and I am wondering why I even upgraded...
 
The responses you are going to get are

1) 4950??
2) 2.1 quad is likely holding you back (especially in WoW), perhaps you can overclock for a few more mhz.

What i remember doing in the past is having to scrap the motherboard,cpu, and the memory (my PS was replaced about 6 months ago and I made sure to get a power horse).

Is that kind of logic still the case? or is it possible to just upgrade the cpu and that be sufficient?

Hard to imagine that wow requires a stronger cpu (cause wow has been around for a while), but I believe you.
 
I don't think there is a C2Q running at 2.1.. it must be a C2D.

Anyway you look at it.. you need to upgrade your CPU.

and cpu is 2.5 pretty sure.

Well to make me look like more of an out of date idiot, my cpu and mobo are in my sig. I was a little off.
Any suggestions for the cheapest upgrade path?

@3GHz you are basically maxed out for the platform. You might be able to get something that you could drop in the mobo that would top out around 4Ghz...but going from 3GHz->4GHz on the old Conroe architecture isn't going to make a huge difference for your gaming.

You are looking for that 2x improvment factor and for that you need to upgrade your CPU to a sandy bridge or westmere gen cpu.

Just what you wanted to hear - "spend more money!"

Intel Q6600 @ 3.0GHz | Abit IP35-pro | 4 GB (2 x 2GB) Gskill

^ that much of it, the rest has been upgraded, including the PS.

Well, it is what it is. I did read on the main page the following suggestion, if anyone had any input it would be awesome:

CPU AMD Athlon II X4 640 $100
Motherboard Gigabyte GA-880GM-D2H $80 ($10)
GPU HIS H577FK1GD 5770 $130 ($30)
RAM Patriot 4GB 2x2GB PSD34G1333K $40 ($5)

Is that the best cheap path? Would I see much of a difference or should i just save up? Thanks again.

Its not even a side grade.. and not worth it at all.

Q6600 at 3 Ghz is actually not a bad CPU... the best video card to go with this CPU is either a GTX 460 or AMD 6850.

What is the native resolution of your monitor?

If you are planning to build a system from scratch.. I suggest you to save some more.. and wait until the end of Q2.

I didn't think it was bad, thats why I was wondering what the hell I can be missing.
I run 1920x1080 and I am not even jacking up all my settings.
 
Wanted to add that if memory serves me correct, it was a really easy overlock on that mobo cpu combo. Damn thing has been running great for years.
 
Best way to check for CPU vs GPU bottleneck is to set everything to low, run a scenario, then set everything to high and try and run the same, or a very similar scenario.
