I have the opportunity to ask a hiring manager some questions...

I have a friend that works at a company that I am applying at. He has talked to the HR manager and she said it was ok to call the hiring manager and ask a couple of specific questions. What is appropriate and not appropriate? I'd really like to know when they will start interviewing, how much the position is worth, etc. Plus if there are any other smart questinos to ask. The postion is a HRIS position.

Ask about the corporate culture and its organization structure.

Ask about the job and its career path

Ask the manager how he got to where he is and where he goes from here.

Find out if it's ok to have sex with the cleaning lady. You don't want that to come back and bite you on the ass down the road.

Ask for some anecdotes about the position you are interested in, and maybe what a typical day for someone in that position would be. Might seem a little ass-kissy, but you could even ask how one would prepare in advance for said position - maybe check out some corporate / company reading material or website(s).

Just be careful to do that in a manner which is not threatening - If you're asking about promotion, it's probably to HIS job.

Reporting and company structure is a good one, as Mwilding mentioned, I also often ask about the team that I'd be working with - How many people, how long have they been there, etc.

dont ask about salary.... save that a second interview if you get one. benefits, work environment, level of supervision...

I would never ask about salary. If they want to hire you, they have to mention it at some point. Always let them bring it up first....
