I have the flu and a job interview tomorrow, what do I do?

What should I do?

  • Call first thing in the morning and ask to reschedule

  • Show up and apologize "I think I might be coming down with something"

  • Show up and apologize "I'm still getting over the flu"

  • Eye of the Tiger: It's possible to look like the best candidate while trying to hide your symptoms

I'm past the worst part of the flu. I'm up and moving around now, but I'm still definitely feeling it. I'm worried that there won't be any times left if I try to reschedule.

Edit: For posterity Option 1 and Option 4 were tied for the most votes when I came back with my answer.

Copied from the other thread.

Go to the interview.

If you don't go, they will call someone else

You have the flu, so what, its not like you have the plague or something serious.

WRONG!

For reference, I've interviewed quite a few folks. I would be pissed and assume you're an idiot if you came in and potentially exposed the interviewers to the flu. That would fall on my list of top 10 ways to completely fail an interview here.

Obviously, you do want to call beforehand and let them know you are ill so they can reschedule.

Drugs. The legal kind. Pepto-bismal, advil, tylenol, etc. I know, you could probably reschedule, but it'll be in the back of someone's mind that in this economy, you couldn't make it in because you were too sick. Besides, you'd only be spreading your germs to human resources.

Unless the position is completely unskilled, any company that only interviews using HR staff must end up with the most incompetent workforce ever.

Truth. I never met with anyone in HR when I interviewed for my current position. I interviewed with my boss and then the second interview was with a group of 4 people including my boss, the controller, and two key people I would be working with. This is a company of over 600 employees and is a supplier to Intel, AMD, TI, etc.

Call them as soon as possible and request that they define the acceptable options for you.
Hopefully they can give you a phone, conference, or web video interview in the interim.

Go to the interview and they will know you're sick when they see you. Ask them if you can re-schedule while you're already there.

If you do this over the phone without them seeing you in person they would assume you're pulling a *cough**cough* like a lot of people do when they call out sick. Expect your files to be put in the garbage bin or at the very best a "waiting" or "last minute" pile.

The correct answer would be to "Show up regardless of how sick you are and ask to reschedule".
That's not one of the poll options.

I was feeling better than I have been. The interview went very well. They're going to schedule a third and final interview. I really like the company and hope to get the job.

That would just piss me off If I were interviewing someone and I made the time in my schedule to go to their interview, only to have them show up and say they couldn't do it. Why not reschedule ahead of time so you don't waste the interviewers time?

Go, apologize ONLY if the interviewer mentions you don't look well, respond with "I'm still getting over the FLU, but my primary physician says I'm not contagious"

Or, Call them ASAP to reschedule. Don't call them the f'in morning of the interview...
