I have some BF2 issues and questions

Serious noob question here, I am a gamer but I usually stick with consoles.

1. Can you use a joystick with BF2, if not how the hell do you get good with the mouse and keyboard??

2. Is there a way to tell how many FPS I am running during the game, I think I need to upgrade my 5900xt.

3. I need some good directions on the controls, I can't find it within the game, anyone know where I can get some good info??

1. Yes you can use a joystick.

2. I don't know.

3. You can find the controls under the Options button in the game.

fraps slows the game down a bit
There's a command in BF2 to show fps

While in-game,press the tidle key (~) and type in the following:
renderer.drawfps 1

1. Yes
2. You can use a good optical mouse like the high dpi gaming mouse and/or set the sensitivity in the game control setting to high. Even crappy
3. Most FPS games in computer uses "W" for forward, "A" for strafe left, "S" for backward" and "F" for strafe right
Read the settings page for details

There are a lot of good articles out about raising your FPS skill by various practice methods. Just do a google search for FPS skill practice etc...

Good luck, have fun!

For the fps question, download fraps @ www.fraps.com

If you hit the downloads button, I believe there is a free version (maybe 2.6.0?)

yup FRAPS

also as for the joystick...in joint operations I use a joystick for flying apaches and things and getting my teammates to call in air strikes over team speak....but for gunning and sniping i use a keyboard and mouse

Bollocks. Just play and have fun and you'll get better over time.

Also, flying is easier with a mouse and keyboard.

I am ok at ground attacks, but are you kidding me, you are actually good at flying while using the mouse and keyboard, I suck bad at that!!!! not sure what I am doing wrong but i usually crash about 5 seconds after i leave the ground. I am averaging about 10-18 kills in a 12 minute period with probably 5-8 kills against me....so not too bad, I just am usually much better at FPS style games on the console, plus I roxor at Doom3

I feel your pain, but the guys are right: you should practice. At first I couldn't even lift the helicopter off the ground and now I'm shooting missiles. I am getting a joystick just for fun

I pwn BF1942 flying, but BF2 won't let me bind my yaw (side-to-side motion) to the mouse 0 axis and it won't let me bind rolling to A and D so I can't fly at all in the new game. Additionally, the game detects control conflicts that don't exist. I love how glitchy it is and refuse to buy a legit version until they fix the problems.

I don't have the game yet, just the demo. But didn't the patches correct the control conflicts? If not, manual editing of controls.con is necessary. It took me more than an hour to get everything setup... then further refinements -and this is coming from a fanatical BF1942 player who had to edit that game's controls a bit too - but really, they fugged up BF2 bad.

Anyway, without a game controller, you lose variable (analog) throttle which is rather limiting. Keyboard rudder will likewise forgoe variable rudder. As said in 'nutha thread, meeces will be adequate or mayhaps even preferable to some for helos due to their simplistic and kinda "training wheel-ish" nature but don't expect to be "top gun" in the jets without a stick.
