Info I have retired my last quad core !

OK, today, I put my 4790k out to pasture. 1800x 16 thread is the slowest computer in my fleet ! Except maybe a Xeon 12 core 24 thread dinosaur. Not sure which one is slower. 24 threads@ 2,8 ghz , or 16 threads@3.7.

Even my old windows XP gaming box has 24 threads@3,0 ghz (dual X5675's)

BTW, I have an I7-950, a Xeon quad-core something and this 4790k. For CHEAP they can go to the right party. Just CPU/motherboard/ram. PM me if interested.

and I kicked myself in the butt a couple of days ago. They had the 2970wx on sales for $1100 instead of $1200. I should have gotten 5 to replace my 1950x's,

But I am broke after all the recent upgrades. Now comes taxes, then $12,000 for my sons family for Disneyland @!

That reminds me a lot of how I gave away my single-core PCs. I pretty-much don't run less than quad-core (Ok, I still have some N2830/2840 Atom-based laptops that are still kicking, but I wouldn't mind replacing them too, I suppose) on my main rigs. (My main rigs are still Ryzen R5 1600, since two years ago.)

Oh, the "core wars" begun have they!

I did not even count my laptops. I think mine is a dial-core I5 something, its never on unless I go travling. So let me amend my statement. All computers that are in my folding farm are minimum of 16 thread.

How is it then, that you are kicking my arse in Rosetta ??? That takes only CPU power, right ?
It can only be because that is all I am doing right now on all my machines. I still have two dual-socket LGA 2011 rigs, two octacore Ryzens and an 8700K, so it's not like I don't have any CPU power left, just somewhat less than before.

I think if you turned all your cores towards Rosetta, then I'd be getting the arse kicking, for sure.

I retired my Q9550 and i5 760 from active duty at the beginning of this year. They still produce okay numbers, but nothing mind boggling. The Q9550 will go to my parents, when I get a chance to set it up at their house. The i5 760 will probably get donated to my in-laws as they're still rocking an Athlon x2 3800+ I gave them years back.

No plans to replace either machine at the moment but maybe something later this year. Both my kids in daycare are killing my wallet so to speak.

Electrical use is part of it. A threadripper does not take much more than an older quad, so I try to keep every box as high as possible in power. So, what I have running (3 boxes turned off) is :

2990wx 64 threads and one 1080ti
2970wx 48 threads, and the 1070 is not running ATM.
4 x 1950x dual 1080ti's
1950x one 1080ti.
2700x with a 2060
2700x with a 1070
E5-2683 with one 1060
dual 5675 Xeons, no video card.

So the 2 2700x's are the slowest.

I have in reserve:
2683 with dual1080s
2683 with dual 1070ti's
1800x with a 1080ti.
The 1070 video card on the 2970wx idle.

Thats 452 threads, 384 currently running
and 13 video cards running with 6 in reserve.
