I have purchased only one extended warranty in my life.

Today I turned on my Sony 51 inch widescreen hi-def rptv.
And the picture was all screwed up.
I called the local repair guy and he thinks its the convergence board, which Sony no longer makes.
So, I thought I was out the money for a new tv.
Then I remembered. I bought an extended warranty for the first and only time in my life on that Sony tv.
And the warranty was for 4 years. And it won't expire for another 6 months!!!!
Circuit City was great. They had all the records. They will have the repair shop call me within 3 business days. And they assured me it won't cost me a penny to fix and if its not fixable they assured me a new tv.

Uhm, no. The two year warranty is only for that first radar detector. The replacement has a 90 day fixed warranty unless you buy another extended warranty for that replacement.

My parents have a 25" Sony CRT from 1990 (they use it as a bedroom TV) and it hasn't once been to the repair shop.
Sigh, they just don't build them like they used to.

it is interesting cause TV's usually either last for a long time, or for no time at all.

my grandparents have this old sony CRT (atleast 7 years old) and it has never needed a repair. sony's build quality has gone down.

That's about what I was thinking too... I'd think you'd be able to easily find a used one for under $400.

Of course if you take into account even a simple rate of return of $400 for 4 years he would have more then just the $400 now.


I hate ext. warrenties. But for a Sony TV, yea its worth it. OLD sony TVs were some of the best. But I would not buy one now. Had a friend that USE to be a sony fanyboy. The last 2 sonys he has bought either died or had major problems.

Remember when the products we bought would last for years, and years? Went back home recently to visit my folks, and the stove, refer, and chest freezer they had when I was growing up were still there,(50+yrs). Our new home came with all G.E. {we bring crappy things to your life}, appliances, and the stove quit before we moved in, and has been repaired twice since,(under 1 year), the microwave just quit,(13 months,wouldn't ya just know it), however, the part that failed had a 5 year warranty, so all I had to pay for was the service call, $156, lucky me :disgust: .
Extended warranties are for people bad at math; Aprox. $1000 product, ext. warranty about
$150 a yr. x 6 yrs. + taxes, delivery, hook- up, maybe a pro-rate = Hmmmm

We got one with our new Pilot. It was about $1100, and if we do not use it, we get the money back at the end of the period. That is not a bad gamble when you consider the cost of one transmission/transaxle repair could go 3 grand or more. I can stand losing the interest on 1100 for the peace of mind it gives to my wife

Something about this seems weird, mostly the part about them giving your money back. Sure you didnt get confused that you could cancel and get a portion of the money back on a prorated basis?

or you could have bought it at costco for far less money (and no additional service plan needed). you'd have gotten your full purchase price back, and you'd have a brand NEW and highly superior television right now, for no more trouble than loading it back into your car.

no, he is correct. they will give the full amount back to him at the end of the period. Honda are so confident that the car won't break that it's basically an interest-free loan for them, and still a no-brainer deal even though they have to give the principle back in a few years. for the consumer, it works out to very cheap insurance. personally, i still wouldn't buy it because i know i'd never need it on a honda.

edit: it's also good for honda because you'll likely FINANCE that extended warranty, meaning you're PAYING interest on the cost of it, versus making interest investing it yourself. so honda earns interest from you, and as you're making the payments, they're building principle with which they can earn interest from the banks, then they give you back your principle, and dance around in all the money that should have been yours.

You pay for a warranty in case the item ceases to work on its own. You must get really lucky to have your radar detectors keep breaking within the warranty period. :roll:
