Question I have one of these: Not fast at all

I bought the item below and it is slow AF. My system has 5 ssd drives and a PCIE card for my BR drive and another SSD. I put this in a PCIE 16 slot and while it works it is dog slow. I mean, useless slow. My mobo is an MSI B360 gamimng plus with a 8700K cpu and a 1080 gpu. Windows 10 pro. What could be the issue?

I'm not positive (I'll wait for someone else to chime in), but I believe it has to do with you having the B360 chipset. It has a lot more restrictions on PCIe compared to a chipset like the Z370 or even the H370.

Generally the B360 and H310 chipset are geared for business or budget OEM type builds, and do not have all the components you have installed. You also have a discrete GPU installed in it, correct? Edit: I see you have a GTX 1080 installed. I'm fairly confident you are simply out of PCIe lanes (only 12 available on the B360 chipset).

Yes, a 1080 GTX.

I learned to only buy a motherboard with the top two chipsets when it comes to Intel. They have generally released 3-4 variations with each new chipset with each new CPU release, and the bottom two chipsets are always so "neutered" in features.

Intel's lane counts in marketing materials are close to nonsense. Filled with dumb stuff like double counting lanes.

The processor should always have 16x lanes, these go to one or two graphics card slots. Literally everything else hangs off the chipset which is all smooshed through a ~4x PCI-e 3.0 DMI link. Which is why dual m.2 slots onboard Intel platforms are of dubious usefulness.

You say you installed it in a PCI-e 16 slot, but you also say you have a GTX 1080. I'm inferring from here but I suspect your GTX 1080 is installed in your main CPU supplied 16x slot and your second "16" slot is a 16x physical, 4x electrical...which also is pushed over the chipset. Given you also say you have 5(!) SSD drives, I suspect the DMI link is just completely overloaded, especially if any of those SSDs are m.2.

No Intel chipset for that CPU will solve this, but if you bought one with 8x/8x pci-e 16x slots you could at least use this device without it competing with limited DMI bandwidth, at the expensive of reducing the available lanes used by your GPU.

I have 5 SSD drives on the 5 SATA ports and one SSD drive on a PCIe x1card that also has my BR drive as I had no more sata ports available. None are M.2 and if I did use an M2 it would disable SATA port 1 which I wanted to avoid.

Perhaps we're all overcomplicating the issue and the thing is just bad?

He could take out his GPU, use the integrated Intel graphics to rule that out.

If it runs at full speed without the discrete GPU installed, the problem is likely he is using more resources than the B360 chipset can provide.

I haven't been overly impressed with nVME beyond the convenience factor. 970 Evo 2TB feels no faster than the old 1TB 850 Pro SATA, which felt no faster than my ancient OCZ Vertex 4 256GB. Benchmarks say it's hellaciously fast, but real world it's ... fine. Things load quickly, just like before.

As for this thing, agree about benching with and without the GPU. Use Crystal Diskmark, and the easy userbenchmark.com as a follow-up.

Even if it works as advertised, the transfer speeds on it are not great for a PCIe NVMe device. Specs:

Max Sequential ReadUp to 3200 MBps
Max Sequential WriteUp to 2100 MBps


In contrast, a 970 Evo (1TB):

Max Sequential ReadUp to 3400 MBps
Max Sequential WriteUp to 2500 MBps
