Hello all,

So I just completed the whole setup thing, and all seems to be going well. On the Seti Driver there is a check box stating "set processor affinity". Now I believe this has something to do with one CPU for one thread/program/task... right? Maybe?

I have a P4/3GHz HT.... is it worthwhile/good for me to check this box?
Right now I just have it running on two threads and should be going pretty good.... just wanting to know what'll help out the most/ work out best for me :)

Besides that, everything was explained clearly in the posts.... thanks making it easy!

First, welcome to the TeAm theboschman! :D

Glad to have you crunching with us...and a very nice rig too! :D

2nd, I don't think I've ever seen that question for a P4 HT processor. I've always enabled it for my Dual AMD rigs, but I'm not sure it matters on the HT processor not. I might be best (a guess here) to not check it as the HT processor isn't really "2 full cores" as are the Dual AMD rigs and therefore, each thread isn't tied to one certain part of the processor.

I could be wrong though.....

Anyone else?

Edit: I just checked my two HT boxes, and both of them had the "Processor Affinity" checked.....so I'm not sure now?

Hey everybody, answer this...I might get more from mine if this were to be unchecked! :p

Hi theboschman, welcome to the team! :)

The system youre using for Seti is one of the best to use for this project! HT really helps the crunching a lot! :)
I haven't used a HT machine myself, but I did use Dual machines for Seti, and it looks like you configured Seti Driver like it should..
The processor affinity isn't needed when running 2 processes. They now equally share the cpu cycles available. But I'm sure
someone else will come with a more 'clear' explanation about this ;)

Happy crunching!!!

first off, welcome to the TeAm! secondly, i am running 2 boxes with P4 HT chips and don't check the set processor affinity box at all in seti driver. that is an option to manually assign which virtual cpu will process which unit. from what i have read, there is no advantage to doing it. its just a setting to manually assign the processor usage. no need to worry about it. windows should take care of you just fine! ive also read that setting the processor affinity could cause irq conflicts and stability issues as well. welcome aboard!

Sweet everyone... thanks for getting back so quick...
It looks like it'll be staying off... the 2 processes thing should be more than enough... although I may check it down to one if I'm actually doing something on my computer.... I guess we'll see....

Too bad I didn't know doing this before :(

Oh well... here's to beating everyone else to the finish anyways!

I'm not sure that I've ever saw a "real performance hit" when running SETI? I've heard that certain AV programs or maybe Outlook issues take place, but I have yet to see any? Maybe I'm just used to it! :)

Oh, and as for games (yep, I do play once an awhile!)....I see no difference in them....unless the darn SETI Transmit box pops up in the middle of the game ! :p

Usually SETI behaves well. I think the new version of SETIDRIVER has an option to force idle the SETI client which may help in conflict situations.

Recently, we've been having problems printing at home. The Lexmark Z-45 would print a few lines, slow way down, then I would get a printer error. Turns out it is conflicting with SETI. Turn off SETI, it prints fine. Turn on SETI, and it won't print.

The weirdest thing about it is that they've both been running fine together for 3 months, and the only changes to the system I've made recently is installing an ATI Radeon 9200 vid card. And I turned off the various ATI services that ATI installs.

have you tried uninstalling/re-installing the printer drivers? I've had lexmark printer drivers have priority issues before that did the same thing anytime I had IE running.
