I originally posted this in the tech forum but I noticed there is a CPU forum so here goes:

I am looking to build a new computer. I will get the appropriate MOBO to fit the processor and type of ram I want so I guess I need to pick a processor.

It looks like the processors that are around the 1gighrz Athalon Tbird 266 fsb are in my price range. Are there any that stand out?

Is there a big jump in performance from the 1 gig to the 1.2? Is there a point that when you get a certain chip you are in a whole new ball game?

I can't spend a ton but if it's a $10 difference to step up 5 steps in performance I want to know about it.

Thanks a ton!

Newegg.com has 1ghz athlon for $78 and 1.2ghz for $94.. $16 for a 20% increase in clock speed.. I'd say it's worth it.

I'd say the faster the processor the better... u'll get a longer life out of it too cuz u wount upgrade the cpu. Plus, (i think) that u can get better reluslts overclocking faster cpus. Thats my opinion. I would set a solid price range (lets say $100) and buy what u can get for it..... if u care less about the money, go with something fast - 1.4, 1.5ghz

I know you said you are tight on the money but I really recommend going with an XP. But like everyone says might as well get the 1.2 GHz for $10 more......

If you get one of the newer motherboards (those that have been released in the past 1 - 3 months) then you should be able to put the next generation Athlon in it. Make sure the voltage will go down to 1.6 - 1.65V and the multiplier will go over X14.

Then look to what processor you can afford.

This way you put off your next motherboard for as long as possible but can use the next generation CPU when you can afford it.

can you give us a better idea of what your budget is? i know that if i were buying a computer right now, i would definitely go with an athlonxp and a kt266a motherboard, but if your budget doesnt allow that, then i guess it would be the processor id cut down so that in the future, upgrading the cpu would be easier.

those 2 guys above made a very good comment. Buy a good mobo, something that will last for a while (more than 1 year) and cut down on the CPU. It shuold do for now and when u get some more $$ buy something powerfull.

If you don't play games, then buy a cheap used duron 700 or faster from the forsale group. I had a duron 700 running at 1 gig, and I never played a game that it couldn't handle. I have an AthlonXP 1600+ that I've overclocked now, but it was harder to get it unlocked than the regular athlons and durons.

A 1gig Tbird will most likely overclock to 1.2 with no problem, and it's easy to do with a pencil.

Personally, I have never just upgraded a CPU. It's always been MB+CPU, and I have been upgrading since the 386-dx40 days.
