Does the current version do what you want it to do?
I had 5.9.9.9 (or something) come with my cd burner and it worked just as good as the older versions I had.
Only upgrade if it is free.. otherwise there really is no point.
Even 6.0 wouldn't do much for me unless I wanted to get into DVD burning.
Speaking of.. 5.5 isnt really an upgrade. If you are going to upgrade just save the money and go to 6 when you can. It's the newest versions. 5.5 would be out of date.

unfortunately, oem nero will only run on burners it was bundled with......

I have found that most Nero updates are simply to add support for newer burners. Though sometimes there are new features added as well. As was said, if it works for you, why spend money unless you need to?
