Had that phase too... never really came out of it. Still rarely play games (used to be much more) and now tinker more with serious programs and OS's. I don't spend that much money on upgrades, just buy what I absolutely need and even then wait untill the old hardware can't really cope anymore.

I have come to view it as a sign of maturity. Growing out of the "I need this P4 3.2 HT box so I can play quack 3 arena at 5 kajillion FPS" phase took me into the mentality of jus getting what you really need plus a little extra without busting the bank (see my main rig for what I mean).

My interests haven't entirely shifted away from computers but it is no longer the dominant factor in my life (Women amplify that effect exponentially). Sure I still got to LANs but only those done by friends and one in particular where there are always lots of people I know. Also do more with my life in general: Partying with buddys, cruising to a corvette meeting with a pal and his 77 vette, doing wierd videos with friends and random people from the lanparty scene...

So I guess what I am saying is that this emptiness you feel is only temporary. You will find an occupation soon enough that will give you the same joy the the PC gave you in the last few years.

I guess it's a sign of "growing up" ... I'm gaming less and less. Still have the occasional weekend party with friends, but by myself it's waning.

I'll pay for shipping and take that Athlon XP 2400+ off your hands for free. I'd be genuinely excited to install it into my system I assure you! :D

me too lately. i havent played a game since UT2k3 first came out. the most advanced computer i have runs on a duron and kt133 chipset and none of my rigs have ddr memory even. i've gotten hooked on building cheap amd based systems just to toy with networking with. buying up the durons, etc on FS/FT. i do sill look forward to next gen graphics and athlon 64.. after that who knows, dell's are lookin' mighty attractive (cheap) these days ;)

...no, you are a dork. Get a life. Have a good day :D

That was mean.

Anyhoo...

I think you're finally discovering what's important in life. Life itself is a learning experience, and you have just graduated one level higher than the rest of us. Like Neo, you're discovering the emptiness of wordly things.

Now, get out and help someone. "Help an old lady cross the street"... those sorts of simple things.

It seems like I go from one addiction to another... gaming, programming, caffeine, girls, programming, games.... I wish I was in your situation right now, not knowing where to go.

I gave my high-level Diablo II Paladin to my best friend when I moved on from gaming. I haven't played computer games much at all in the last year. The year before that, however, I spent more time on Starcraft and Diablo II than I did sleeping. It's a phase that won't come back if you're lucky.

A computer is a tool, not a master. It can become a "false god" if you're not careful. I caught myself doing that within the last week, actually, waking up every morning to work on a PHP script and going to bed at night thinking about what I'd do to it the next day.

I'm on that road myself, isn't it great?

My 1.2 ghz machine died a few weeks ago and I was more than content with my old P2 266 mhz for surfing, IM'ing, and email. If Dell hadn't had that sweet deal on the Dimension 4600, I'd still be using it. I think I just bought the 4600 cuz that's what I've been used to doing. Pure impulse buy but after I bought it, I was like why did I buy this? p4 2.8c w/ ati radeon 9800. Will that chip ever see O/Cing? doubt it. I might test out those awesome 9800 graphics in a mean game of solitaire once in awhile :) I have a souped out email and internet surfing machine. This computer should last me for a good 5-6 years at this rate.

Only time I play any kind of video game is when I play 3-4 players with my friends on Gamecube.

I've been getting into working out big time and after work, go to the gym for a couple hours, play in recreational softball, bowling, and hopefully basketball (soon) leagues, my week is pretty filled and I'm not sitting in front of computers! (well accept at work). My girlfriend of 2 1/2 years finally got a job down here and will be moving down soon. She always keeps me active and away from the computer ;)

Other crazy things like savings account is increasing! Not buying that extra hard drive or a little more RAM I might use someday, etc really helps!

You're in what is called a win-win situation....

Try to get some dates.... if you get dates, you win... who needs computers and pron anyway?
If you don't get dates... you'll realize just how important your computer is for downloading pron, and you'll be back to the 'ol keyboard soon.

yup, i'm getting somewhat bored with everything too. I play games only a little, but more and more I'm out drivin' around. I'm going from computer-->car, and for my sake, it's probably better in the end :D

I'm finding myself slipping in that direction too.

When it comes down to it, I'd rather be driving than playing games.

only thing is, a little bit of Colin McRae Rally 3.0 and then going out in the mountains on secluded roads seems to hit the spot with me :D Computer games still are useful to me in this case...rally games that is :p

Sounds like me right before I decided to change my life.
My solution was to keep computers as a hobby, nothing more. I'm in the Marines now, shooting towards a career as an F-22 or JSF pilot. I'm much happier and have a much brighet outlook on life.

I'm not saying join the military, but maybe you should look at a different option other than code-monkey for your life goal.

Dood, dissconnect your computer from the Internet for a week. Then your passion for your computer will come back. IT worked for me. I was totally bored of computers. Then my dad took away my computer for a week and now I'm more interested than ever. Try watching Anime or Movies on your computer. It's fun when you have an ATI card with TV out.

Thanks. I'm glad I live up to my name.

At least I know who I am. Do you know who you are, or are you one of those billions of posers who try to fit other people's molds of success?
