we can run long distances fine, however having shoes with good built in arch support helps, or having custom orthodics

Well, that's completely false since I've run marathons and been in triathlons.

Running shoes built for stability or motion-control can correct the problem, as well as orthodontic inserts.

Medical science can fix a flat chest. But got flat feet? Nuthin they can do for ya. Just goes to show their priorities.

Wait, I'm flat footed & have been trying to Jog (in addition to running and biking), and have had cramping issues in my legs. Should I spend the money & go to one of those running shoe places to get measured and get a recommended shoe? Could it be my flat feet?

It's not likely that your flat feet cause cramping, though if you run a lot it wouldn't hurt to have properly fitting shoes to avoid potential injuries or undue stresses on your feet.

Have you tried eating bananas to alleviate the cramping? Cramps are often a sign of a potassium deficiency and bananas are a good source of potassium.

Foot/leg issues from running are almost always due to wearing improper footwear. Unless you're already wearing stability/motion-control type shoes, I would recommend going to a Running store to get properly fitted.
