I have figred it out,the rouetr I hooked up did something to the gateway and I had to resetthe password and username on the DSL acct.

Thanks to all who offered their help and info.... ;)

I booted the centrino up this morning and I have signal and connection as usual but cannot connect to the internet ???

My desktop upstairs works fine and there are no driver/software issues on the laptop,it worked fine last night.
I have noticed my IP ADDRESS AND DEFAULT GATEWAY is different than my desktop??

desktop ip is 192.168 etc... and the laptop is 10.0.1.4 ???

Any ideas ???

I have rebooted and turned wifi off and back on to no avail ??

Anyone have any ideas ????

The 10.0.1.4 address sounds like a local private address. Are you still getting your IP via DHCP? Double check that, because it sounds like you have a static IP set.

If both devices are wireless and using DHCP then they are associating to different Access Points, getting IP's from different DHCP servers. That's the short answer. There are some variables. Lock down your AP. Change the SSID, use WEP. Things you should already be doing.

Umm, your desktop is actually using the AP's router to get the class 3 space address (192.168 is reserved for the LAN) and your laptop is set to a static IP... this could easily happen if the laptop was plugged into a "non-router based" network (your cable modem, a network at work)). Set the desktop to auto obtain ip and auto dns and reboot... things should work fine.

O.K. Now that you mentioned the router...

I just picked up a wireless router to act as a access point a few days before this happened,I was just using a PCMCIA CARD in my actiontec gateway but figured the router that would be closer would have a better signal.
I have disconnected the router and just using the card again on the gateway.

I will try to do what you said and prey...

Thanks so much....

I'm confused... in the end, do you want to use just the gateway or do you want to use the router ? My instructions were based on thinking you wanted all your computers to go through that router.

Sounds like both devices are handing out IP's, the original gateway (a NAT router) and the one you just bought. You need to disable the DHCP service on the one you just bought, and bypass the WAN port on that device if your not already. That will turn that device into a dedicated AP. How are you connecting that to your existing network? You'll also want to make sure the two AP's are on non-overlapping channels. Don't think I've ever seen a SOHO device handing out 10.X.X.X addresses but that is what it sounds like is going on and it's perfectly legitimate as it is a reserved address. If both clients are setup for DHCP then that is what is happening, or your picking up someone elses WLAN and they have setup their server to hand out 10.X.X.X addresses.

I wanted to use the router as an access point, but it is all mute now because I have screwed it up and now cannot even get my wifi card to work ???
I think the router caused all my current problems??
I should have just stuck with what I had working ..but no I had to try to get a stornger signal..
I am just an idiot when it comes to tcp/ip ip address, wep, dchp and such, yes I know it is sad...:frown:

So I guess my only option now is to do a fresh install of my xp and everything else ??
I am trying to get a friend to walk me through this and check all my settings but he is so busy that is impossible...so......
Maybe I can find someone here to get on messenger on night and pay them to walk through this with me,I do not know what would be easier ??
I really do not want to do a fresh install ....:frown:

Please no flaming I am already depressed and embarressed enough....:(

I am going to go back in today and se what settings I have changed and try to undo them or try another restore point...

Sorry for the confusion and thanks for all the help guys,I do appreciate it,even though I am apperently ignorant to this..:p

easy fix is to manually set your ip to whatever your desktop is set

ie.
ip of desktop is 192.168.1.2/255.255.255.0 (subnet)/192.168.1.1 (gateway)

set laptop to ip of desktop is 192.168.1.3/255.255.255.0 (subnet)/192.168.1.1 (gateway)

and that'll force it to talk on the same network.

Just tried that ....no go...:frown:

I tried the address from the properties from the control panerl > networks>properties and then also went into the gateway rouetr and had a different set of ip and gateway, tried both sets manually and nothing..

If anyone is in st.paul and would be willing to stop by and help theres $50 i it for ya,I am at my wits end......:|
