Ditch the Granny Knot to Tie Your Shoes More Efficiently

The difference between shoes tied with a balanced, neat, and self-tightening knot versus those tied with an unbalanced, sloppy, and loose knot, is all in how you make your first loop.

Over at Runner's World they've put together an instructional video to go along with an informative article on the difference between Granny Knots and Reef Knots. Well tied shoes are important to runners, but anyone can benefit from the simple change in knot tying-methodology outlined in the video below:

By simply altering the direction of the first loop you make when tying your shoes you can produce a neater knot that is less prone to coming untied.

Oh fuck yeah - already doing it right. Apparently I am even more awesome that I knew!

I had to retie mine to check. I also felt weird watching a video at work on how to tie shoes

Someone posted a youtube video of this like a year ago. I found I was tying one shoe correctly and one not and the one I did wrong seemed to loosen on me all the time. Even old dogs can learn new tricks sometimes.

Not sure if serious, but we have our first practice for the Summer Season tonight.

Should I start a new thread for this season? ;)

take each lace
put 1 under the other, then over then under again
tighten
you still have 2 laces in each hand
form loop
do normal loop knot
tighten
do loop knot again

First read this in an issue of Runner's World approx 20 years ago, eventually they recycle all the old material over and over again. Which is why I stopped subscribing years ago.

There's also better ways to lace your shoes than the traditional cross over. There's one way I've used a lot on running shoes to keep it tighter on the heel is to skip the second to last hole, then go back to it on the same side, than crossing over and using the loop between the last two holes. If you hav ea skinny heel like me, this helps prevent blisters when breaking in a new pair.

i get a "granny" knot no matter which way i loop it...

this makes no sense. either way you tie you you can get a granny knot OR a reef knot? how can tying it the same way produce 2 different knots?

From what I can tell I've been doing it the right way all along, but the laces on my gym shoes aren't long enough to hang as much as his do, so I can't tell if they are pointing, and I don't want to retie my everyday shoes because they won't feel right after.

My sister learned how to tie the granny knot method. The rest of us kids (3 of us) learned the "correct" method. All of us learned using a cardboard shoe my mother (who had been a school teacher) made, and threaded a shoelace through, so we could learn to tie our own shoes.

I always thought there was something different about sis.... :sneaky:

That's just a square knot vs. a granny knot. Granny knots can be pulled free because there is no bight on the lines. Square, no, unless a lot of force

Easy way to tie square knot=
right over left, then left over right
or
left over right, right over left

I've always tied mine right. Either way, following that video... the way I tie my shoes, it's impossible to do a granny knot anyway.
