I have AT&T & bought an Iphone - it required me

to sign up for the $20 data plan - I don't mind b/c I use the internet all the time.

my question is ... if I bought my wife an iphone and had it jailbroken, do I have to sign up for any sort of data plan? All she does is call & some texting.

Unless something has recently changed, they will not sell you an iPhone without requiring you to sign up for the special iPhone data plan.

I don't think so. Are you just adding another line to your plan? I wouldn't even tell them you have another iphone but just get another line w/ a free phone or something and add your Sim card.

NVM I see that your buying the Iphone from AT&T. I'd suggest purchasing one of craigslist or something and JB it. Then do what I suggested. I don't know if you care if its 3g or not but you can find 1st gens for $200 give or take

yeah.. i'd be buying the next iphone off Craigslist or something - not FROM AT&T.

I didn't mind signing up for the 20 plan b/c I need to receive work email, access the net etc... but she won't do this at all - so, i'd hate to fork out that extra 20 for no reason

EDIT: we already have a 2 line plan. I have the iphone, she has an 8525 - so I'm thinking we'd JB it and switch out the SIM card.

If it's bought elsewhere than no you won't need a data plan.

You don't need a data plan if it's unlocked and jailbroken. That's how I'm using my iPhone actually.

If you have an unlocked 2G then no. However, if you use a 3G you will be notified by text message that you must get the 3G data plan which is $30 or the phone will cease to work. They know you are using it by the IMEI when it connects to the network.

I have heard of this, of course there are ways around this 😉

This is what my friend did:

He bought a new iphone form AT&T and hacked it. After hacking it, he turned off 3g and the internet and keeps it only on the regular edge network, or maybe something even below that. Then he called AT&T, told them he broke his iphone, went back to using his old phone and that he wanted the iphone data plan removed. Ever since then, he continues to use the phone for regular calls and texting without the data plan on his bill.

What the hell is the point of having an iphone without internet? Without a data plan, he'd be charged by the kb for data transfered.

Maybe he just wanted, you know, a phone? And maybe the mp3 player.

Did you even read the OP? The entire point of this thread is about having an iphone without any sort of data plan and just using it as a phone and for texting.

And no, without a data plan he would not be charged by the kb. With an iphone, the second you start accessing the internet on their network without a data plan, they make you sign up for the data plan, there is no pay per kb on the iphone.

AND there are many reason to have an iphone without the internet data plan. Maybe someone likes the interface and wants to use it as a phone and for texting and really has no interest in accessing the internet. Maybe when they want to get on the internet they will just use the wifi. Maybe they wanted an 8gb itouch but realized that an 8gb iphone with a contract is cheaper and has more features. There are plenty of reasons other than internet to have an iphone.
