I have an 'interview' at Microsoft Great Plains tomorrow..

So my current boss knows a guy over at MS-GP here in Fargo, ND, apparently this guy works with their phone systems there although I'm not actually sure what he does. It pretty much went down like this: my boss asked if I needed a job this summer and offered to call over there and see if he could find something for me. This guy at MS-GP said to send him (me) over, my boss wrote down on a peice of paper, the guys name, time and the building I need to go to.

I called today and confirmed with the receoptionist that I was expected at that time... That is where it ends I guess.

What do I need to do to be prepaird for this? I'm a graphic communications major really, so my resume is mainly focused on my graphical skills, although it touches a bit on my general computer knowledge. I really don't know what job I am 'applying' for if there is an actual job! and it really dosen't sound like this is much of an 'interview' from how my boss makes it sound...

Any advice?

edit: I really suck at spelling today...

edit2: just about ready to leave for there right now, wish me luck! 😀

Sounds like a get-to-know-you-interview. Just to make sure you're not a wack-job and that you have some skills. Know your own resume and be prepared to give examples of how you utilized the skills listed. Other than that, find out as much as you can about the company/their location. Definitely ask them questions to show interest.

Should I modify my resume a bit, maybe add a bit more as far as my other computer skills are concerned? My boss has already told him quite bit about what I do around our office/home for him, atleast he makes it sound that way. As far as questions, don't worrie, there will be a lot of them 😛

What is this 'get to know you interview'? Get to know me and see if I have skills to offer, then they would consider having me apply? .. or something along those lines?

When you get there, how about fixing the horrendous install procedure!!!
God I just had to update 100 machines with the latest version... it sucks!

latest version of what? iirc Great Plains makes custom account software mainly, maybe I'm wrong though..

Well, if this is just a meet and greek you really don't need to sweat it. Just be yourself and be confident. Also, you may want to be on the look out for some really bizare questions. I don't know if they would do this for a summer job but I have heard that they like asking strange questions to see who well you think on your feet.

They make what used to be called Dynamics, then it was changed to Great Plains eEnterprise, the MS bought them. We use eEnterprise, it's not a custom product, but has the ability to be customized.

GP is known for some pretty odd interview questions from what I hear, I am not sure of the specifics really, so I can't say if it would be just a summer job, or something like full time in the summer, part time during the school year. I do know my boss told him that I was looking for part time work during the school year and that I had very flexable hours 😛

Thanks for the replies guys! I really appreciate them 🙂 I need a job, and working for MS while still in college is probably the best job I could ever ask for.

What exactly is it used for?

Mostly accounting, financial reports, asset management, banking, etc... (actually they dropped the name eEnterprise and just call it Microsft Business Solutions). It's a base program that has the following modules which can be installed.

Yeah, the meeting you're going to is just a meet and greet type deal for the guy to give you a once over to be sure you're not going to waste their time going through the MS interview process. After your meeting, he'll contact MS human resources to begin the official interview process which is nothing short of tedious and bordering on psychotic. There are entire books written about the MS interview process the deal with what each step of the process is examing, how to prepare for it, what to do, etc... Assuming you make it past the first half-dozen interviews you actually have a fairly good chance at being offered the job. Enjoy the first meeting and relax, what you're about to go through is nothing short of ridiculous.

Thats exactly what it was =/ Talked to me, looked over my resume, a few of the standard interview questions , a short tour, hung out in the corp. support area and talked with those guys in there for a while. Then on the way out he said he was going to look around and see what was going to be avaiable in the summer and would email me with some information.

Whatever, It's not like I had all the much else to do today, if nothing comes out of it, no big deal, if I can swing an internship for the summer and maybe a job in the fall, that would be cool.

This finding a job thing sucks 🙁
