I bought a gateway profile off the forums here to tinker with. The motherboard has an intel 810e chipset in it. Its socket 370, its old i know, wondering whats the fastest processor i could probably put in it, socket 370 chips arent that much so i would like to try and upgrade it if possible, currently has a celeron 466 chip in it.

Thats a pentium 3 chipset. Maybe an 866mhz or 1ghz if you're lucky. But I wouldn't even waste my time spending money on something so old. You could buy a $400 dell budget machine thats faster than that thing.

The fastest PIII processor would be the Coppermine 1Ghz S370 PIII.

You would have to get a 100Mhz FSB PIII (Coppermines). Those range in speed from maybe 500Mhz to 1 Ghz. You should be able to run basic apps and win xp with those.

Is that a RAMBUS or SDRam board? The 810e SDRam chipset had a known math error back "in the day". It didn't effect the RAMBUS chipset. Actually, I know the Dell 810e RAMBUS boards were slot1. I have one sitting here right now. BTW, 256 megs and XP = SLOW!!! :D
