that is interesting. but i think it is unreasonable to think that wireless providers can put a tower on everyone's roof so that the signal is strong enough for use in every basement of all customers

go to Wilson Electronics and get an external antenna and an antenna adapter for your phone. Mount the antenna outside, and run the cable inside. Plug the antenna adapter into the phone (or slide it over the phone, depending on the model). Voila! Reception!

You'll be tied to the antenna cable while you're in the apartment, but you'll get much better reception. I have this setup at my farm (we don't have a land line), and it works. Goes from no service to 4 bars of strength when I connect to the antenna.

EDIT: Total cost depends on the antenna you pick, but it will be a lot cheaper than a repeater. They will also function on multiple bands, depending on the model.

Of course, Verizon also supplies land lines, they'd rather have you paying for both a land line and a cell phone at once 🙂

Two different companies, just share a similar name. Verizon is for landlines only, no corporate ties to Verizon Wireless, which is actually a partnership with Vodafone I think. They have a few bridges here and there, but not enough that they share money or anything like that, so the CEO of one wouldn't benefit from making such a statement about the other.
