Is there any way to play the game as a crafting character? From what I've read, all craft skills seem to be secondary to your primary character class. I have no interest in fighting or killing things, but I wouldn't mind playing the game as a craftsman.
 
No. Crafting requires levels.

To play entirely as a crafter, EQ2 or UO are probably better solutions. It's technically possible in EQ1, however the designers there seem to believe that the proper use of tradeskills is as a gigantic money sink to suck money out of the economy, so it's impossible to support yourself with pulling in external money in some fashion ( selling anything is more or less unfeasible ).

 
UO had an awsome trade skill system, and a stable, well adjusted economy. But I played it for 7 years. Looks like none of the new age MMORPGs can touch the grand daddy as far as a player economy is concerned.
 
lineage2's dwarfs. All they do is craft, and make a ton of money.

Thing is, it takes levels to be able to craft the higher lvl crafts, and damn, dwarves are damn hard to level.

I made at least a million pp profit tradeskilling in EQ1... but if you say so 😛

Yes, but did you do *only* tradeskills relying on your own resources ? I would think not, as you can't make money from vendoring low end combines, and noone at all will buy low end combines.

You've got two possibilities - farm cash to support your tradeskills until you reach a point at which you can make something people will buy, or get someone to give you seed money.

Well yes, apart from having to level up to do tradeskills, you would also be playing lineage 2 ;p

Well now you're changing your tune a bit... But regardless, while it would be bumpy at the beginning, a career as a level 1 tradesman in EQ1 would have been entirely possible. It would have required playing the market a lot in order to have money to skill up, but then this is a skill anyone who fancies themself a tradesman should be at least decent at; trading is a lot more than levelling a tradeskill, buying/farming materials and selling the finished product 😉 Personally I had no aversion to levelling a character, which obviously made it easier. However my tradeskill profits were almost entirely with bought materials - not farmed.

try eve online, nothing ever has come close to the player driven economy that eve has, send me a pm with your email and I'll whip up a trail account serial for you 🙂
