Hello everyone and thanks for looking at this. My problem is that I have a laptop at my house on my network that keeps getting a 169.xxx.xxx.xxx ip address. I have pc's at my house hooked up to a switch which shares an internet connection with a cable modem. This laptop has worked before, but I had to reload Windows 98 on it and now i keep getting a bad ip address. If I assign it a good IP address it can ping my other pc and get a response back, but it can't get on the internet. I thought that was very strange. I also can't ping an internet site with it, but i can ping my other pc. I am totatally lost! Could someone please help me with this. It did work before and now it doesn't. I appreciate all of your help. Thank you.

Make sure that the settings in ipconfig match one of your other computers. IE: subnet, Default Gateway etc

I checked that and made sure that everything was the same on the laptop as it was on the pc that worked. I just gave it a different IP address.

Start>Run>winipcfg

drop down the menu to your network adapter.

Set the IP address, gateway, subnet mask to proper values for your network.

I suggest setting the IP to one outside of the DHCP server's scope.
If the other computers have IPs like .101, .102, then your dhcp server is handing out adresses from 100 and on up. Use .90 for instance in that case.
If your other computers have numbers like .2, .3, then .90 will also be safe. It is a bummer when the DHCP server hands out your static addy to another comp when you are not looking;)

SkyKing, I tried that and I get the same thing. I can ping my other pc, but I still can't get on the internet, or ping and internet site. This is really wierd.

Do you think that maybe i should just reload windows and cross my fingers or something? It is really driving me nuts. I have never seen this happen before. My other pc in which i tried to get on the network, all of the sudden is doing the same darn thing. THis is a true pain in the butt.

Try removing just the network card and reinstalling that first before blowing it away. YOur TCP/IP stack sounds like it has problems.

If you really do have a switch and not a router.......

Turn off your other (first) computer, power-cycle the cable modem then turn on the laptop.

If you get an IP, the cable co has limited the number of CPE devices that your modem will allow conencted (how many IP's it will hand out).

If this is the case, you call can and try to get more IP's (there may be a monthly cost) or you can purcahse a router.....

Was just going to comment on this, that is what I suspect is going on as well. The 169 address is an autoconfig address, it suggest that the machine could not reach a DHCP server or the DHCP server did not give out a valid lease (which would happen if you used all of the available ones from your cable modem)

Ok guys I went home tried a bunch of stuff and nothing worked. However, I gave it an ip address and set the the rest of the settings up the same as my pc that works. This is what the IPCONFIG /all looks like. I can comunicate to this pc from work, right now i am using remote desktop to control it. But i still can't get the pc to go on the internet. This is really puzzling, to say the least. Well down below is the IPCONFIG /all, please don't torture my pc.

Yeah, I did not read your original post well. you are on a switch and are getting adresses from the ISP directly. They are not going to give you an infinite number of addresses.
You have probably been stealing other people's IP addresses when you pick one manually!!!
You need a router, plain and simple. That will allow you to hook up several machines and share one WAN IP.

Could you recomend a router for me then. I have 3 or 4 pc's hooked up and I don't want to spend more than $60 or so dollars. The cheaper the better. If you could help me pick on out from somewhere i would really apriecate it. Thanks a lot for your help.

go for cheap. go to the hot deals section of this forum, type in router in the search box, and buy the cheapest one with the fewest rebates/hassles.
You will be getting a wireless one most likely, since they are the high volume/low price thing. Just turn off the wireless feature if you do not want to use it.
