Ok, i would like to build a semi server. just for file storage.
im planning on using a duron 900.

Can anyone suggest a good motherboard that has raid ports that i could also use as IDE ports? doesnt have to be anything new, as long as it's stable. im gonna probably use some crucial pc 2100 ram so dont need anything like the new abit board.

i dunno, lots of motherboards would fit the bill, why not search at newegg?

i dont pay a whole lot of attention to new hardware lately, one that does come to mind though is the abit KG7 raid....

does anyone know if i could use the raid ports on this as regular IDE ports?

no, look it up at newegg, it uses AMD's 760 chipset. (via SB though :/)

raid ports are IDE ports. the controller just also has raid capabilities. any mobo with ide raid should be able to have it switched off and use the ports as normal ide.
