I have a question for Harry Potter fans

SAWYER

Lifer
I started watching the movies and right now I am on the Prisoner of Azkaban. Why are the dementors after Harry? I thought they were placed at the castle to protect against the escaped prisoner, and why are they just targeting Harry?

Because that's the way the movie writers thought it should be done.

i believe it's because sirius black is harry's godfather and they figured where harry is, that's where eventually sirius will be.

Also because the dementors are kinda on Voldemort's side, and Voldemort wants Harry dead.

Well why were they attacking him on the train and in the sky during the cribbage match? Why not just watch Harry and wait for Black?

Stop being a lazy ignoramus and learn to read.

but, but, some of us don't know how to read, hence, why movies are made.

WHY AREN'T YOUR SOUND-SHAPES MAKING NOISE, OH GOD WHAT'S HAPPENING

i'm astounded that i don't even know what that means.

Well, you don't really find out until later books but if you don't mind me possibly "spoiling" some it I will be happy to explain.

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

*LAST WARNING*

The scar on Harry's forehead bears a small bit of the soul of Voldemort... enough to give Harry the ability to do things like speak Parsel tongue and create a mental connection with him. This becomes incredibly important in the later books/movies but is not quite apparent right now.

The Dementors themselves are blind and only sense human emotion. Seeing as Harry watched his parents die, has a sucky life outside of Hogwarts, and is generally hunted by Voldemort he's enough of a sadsack pessimist to attract the dementors. Doubly so when they sense Voldemort's connection. This is why Lupin gives Harry chocolate when the Dementors attack. Chocolate generally makes a person cheer up. He could as well baked him a cake or told him a funny joke.

This is also assumed to be the way Sirius Black escapes from Azkaban, since the dementors can only sense human emotion, he slipped through the bars after transforming into his dog shape.

The dementors are obviously down with the darkness. They take the side of Voldemort in the final battle and are referred to as having ignored rules of people on "the good side". Just another reason for the Dementors to go after Harry.

Everything italicized is stuff that you don't really find out/understand until later.

And don't be surprised if they do a shitty job mentioning this in the movies.

IMHO, movies can never go into the same level of detail as a good book does.

When I read it, I didn't see it as them attacking Harry. Harry just had a bad reaction to them being that close to him on the train. The reason that the Dementors are on the train is because Sirius Black (the murderer of his parents) had escaped and they're going to Hogwarts to protect the students.

Of course books can't. To make movies as detailed as books the movies would have to be 8hrs long each. That just isn't going to happen.

Books are fine as are movies. I just love how people harp on movies made from books...

I thought in the book it said something like they can sense people who have been through horrible events and faced great tragedy. It is the same reason they target Neville.

More than anything, I think all the "book movies" we see out nowadays really shows Hollywood's lack of creativity.
