I have a problem talking on the phone

I just can't have good conversations on the phone.

usually, when my friends call me, I just answer to whatever they're asking without initiating any conversation myself. It's just too hard to not look at a person when I'm talking to him/her. Still, talking with friends is okay cuz I could just listen in and not worry about having boring conversations.

but then, this also applies to talking with hot chicks:). I can't get myself to engage in those 3hr calls like my friends do. But when I'm actually with her, then I could just chat and chat and chat and chat and, you get the point.

am I wierd? or WHAT?

That's not too weird. I don't mind phoning or talking in person, but I like IM a lot because I can go back and modify my text before sending (in case I type something that doesn't sound right or something like that).

Nope. Conversation flows a lot easier for me when I'm actually with people too.. although sometimes I think I talk more on the phone. I guess it depends on the person.. just talk to someone a few times on the phone, and try not to think too hard. Talk about whatever comes to mind.

I'm the same way. I suck at small talk, and I hate talking on the phone. Whenever I call a girl up, our conversations are something like this:

Hey is blah blah there?
speaking
oh hey this is matt
hi wassup
not much, I was just wondering when practice is
oh its at blah blah
ok thanx bye
bye

I'd like to talk to her longer, but I quite simply have nothing to talk about. In person at least lapses in conversations arent as difficult, because its not just a disembodied voice.

I'm the same way except in person; on the phone i'm money baby and in person I just can't really be bothered.

Introverted people aka geeks hate small talk and in general find other people horribly uninteresting.

This problem may be manifesting itself in you as difficulty in having phone conversations. You need to look at the underlying problem, and acknowledge that you are a geek.

It becomes easier once you come to terms with who you really are.

I am a good conersationalist but I hate talking on the phone b/c it's generally a waste of time. WHenever I'm on the phone, I feel like I could be doing something else more productive, but I'm not talented enough to be able to do other things while on the phone.

I have the same problem. I never talk on the phone for more than 5 minutes. Just a fact I lived with.

hey, so many other people have the same problem... cool!!! :)

I just think it's the worst when you get some girl's phone# and it's kinda understood you talk for a bit until you ask her out.

cuz it is kinda awkward to go:
hey, is ... home?
speaking
wanna go out for ...
sure.
bye

 So true. I hate the phone because it seems like a waste of time. I'd rather meet people in person.

You're the conversation mastah!! ;) In your case I'd go ask the girls out IN PERSON :p

As for me I am kinda ho-hum on both in person and on the phone, unless I know the person well. I've had 7 hour conversations before...my ear hurt for hours afterwards. Just pressing the phone on it...even with switching the ears!

The phone is to be used for transmitting information only and calls should be as brief as possible. IMing is better, real world is best. I never could understand people who could spend an hour plus on the phone... until I left for college away from my bf. I am now learning the conversational skills needed to communicate without eye contact or time for careful word choice.

Don't worry. GIRLS ARE phone magnets. Usually this apply for women of all age. Haven't you noticed the amount of kibetzing your mother does on the phone?

Guys don't usually call me unless they're good friends, looking for advise on computer and stuff like that, but girls call me for no reason just wanting to talk about everything and nothing.
