hey guys , i have a problem i cant seem to fix. I dont know if anyone will be able to help but here goes.

i recently upgraged my line from 1meg to 6megs . the problem is that my internet speeds is fluctuating from 1 meg to about 5 1/2megs. ( i know this beacuse i run speed test right after another and the speed changes) never reaches 6megs :( if i do to many things online it complety resets my connection. when im playing xbox live or pc games i lag and times out sometimes. im thinking it might be my modem/router, but im not sure. I have called my isp and they said that its fine. what should i do? anyone have any ideas or point me in the right direction? thanks guys

If it does the same while directly onhe Modem insist that the ISP send a person to check the local installation.

ISPs pretend that they can Fix every thing from their office, which is a Fallacy; many things can go wrong locally without being reflected back to their computers.

You speed tests will never show 6Mbit. They advertise 6mbit as the sync rate and doesn't count for the ~15% TCP/IP overhead.

Answer the above questions and we maybe able to help isolate.

Did you have both units prior to speed upgrade?
Which unit is handling the authenticaion? (PPPoE)?

yes i had both units prior to upgrade....the modem is doing the authentication. before upgrade never had probelms on my 1 meg pipe. its like i run a speed test (www.numion.com) and one test ill be at 5.7 megs then ill do a test right after that and ill be at 2.3 then ill do another one and its 3.7 or something like that. Its fluctuating up and down. Ill be downloading a file, it will go fast..then it will slow down..it does not make sense. :( keep it coming. someone out there can help..

there could be a lot of reasons for your problems:

the connection dropping:
most likely your router...

the speed changes:
could be some noise on your lan line
could the the modem
could be other things

heres what i suggest:
reset EVERYTHING to the default settings, the modem, router, and your PC
then hook the modem directly to the PC...make sure u turn off any firewalls you have installed
run some tests, play some games

if you have problems:
it is something related to the line modem or there is some bad software on your PC

if you dont have problems:
hook the router up, do the same thing...

problems:
its probably the router (OR, if you have another PC on the network, there could be a problem with it or it is using too much bandwidth (gamimg, torrents, etc))

no problems:
what else could be wrong? prolly some bad settings on your pc...

hope that helps...
