The top of the dirt was even with the sidewalk hence the digging.

Even if the top of the dirt was higher than the sidewalk, mulch still can be apply on top of the soil.

The trouble is that the area I'm going to mulch is about 2 foot wide by 20 feet long. So I don't think a mound would work well.

Maybe I could just mail an envelope full of dirt to every forum member... :evil:

u should preserve your soil, not dig it out do some land scaping or something.
as said theres no need to dig up dirt to put down mulch.

Thanks for the (serious) suggestions, all. I ended up transferring the dirt to the backyard where I have a big patch of plants overgrown with weeds. Now I have to figure out what to do with that patch.
