That's the BIOS chip...not the clock generator. The clock generator and BIOS chips are different.

With the 1005 BIOS, you will get all FSB setting from different clock generator.

Are you saying that even with the Winbond clock chip you can get all 32 FSB settings if you use BIOS 1005? Boards with the Windbond chip have only been getting 16 instead of 32.

DeadlyKnight-

If you have an older board then you probably have an ICS clock chip. I have a board with this chip and all of the FSB settings. I need to buy another one for another system I'm putting together but I'm afraid I'll get one with the Winbond chip and only half the settings. If I understand Tseng right he is claiming you will get all of the FSB settings even with the Winbond chip if you use the 1005 BIOS. I'm pretty sure the newer boards with the Winbond chip are shipping with the 1005 BIOS so I don't think this is a true statement. Anyone out there have any input on this?

I didn't realize they changed the clock generator until I got another board in the mail today. This is my 3rd P3V4x; the other two have the ICS chip.

Aside from the (possible) missing bus speeds, how does this chip differ as far as performance??? Does anyone have any experience with it. Also, do I need to mount a heatsink on this one too???

A little advice before I put this puppy together would be appreciated.

I don't think you need to mount a heatsink on the Winbond clock generator. Word is that the Winbond chip is much cooler than the ICS chip, which was the reason why they changed the chip in the 1st place, to solve heat problems.

Hmm...I think I would have prefered the extra heatsink.

Just a FYI
I just put in the CUV4X and it comes with the ICS chip with all the settings. Boots up at 150 FSB without a problem. Unfortunately, my Linksys nic does not like higher bus speeds and refuses to download files.

Just an FYI...I did put a heatsink on the winbond chip & this one seems to get HOTTER than the hs on the ICS. Not exactly real scientific, but that's my take.

Also, my c2 566 went 807 (95FSB) w/ the ICS chip, but now on the "updated" board, it can only go 708 due to the lack of fsb choices. It also seems more unstable, even at the lower speeds.

As far as I am concerned, the new P3V4X is a total POS!!!
I'd rather take the old one, any day of the week. I am feeling quite cheated, getting a board with only HALF as many choices!!! :|

Deadly Knight: do you have any proof that you have 32 speeds AND the winbond chp. It doesn't seem to make much sense.
