I have a hole in my cat

I was flooring it as I was merging onto the highway today when all of a sudden my car got really loud.
I check it when I got home and found a sensor looking like thing suspended by wires and a hole in my catalytic converter where it belongs.

The bottom my car is rusty as hell... damn northeast winters.

Is it ok to drive like this for awhile before getting it fixed this weekend (other than the loud ass noise).
Do I have to replace the whole cat or just plug the sensor back in somehow?

the sensor is an oxygen sensor, it tells the computer how much oxygen is present in the exhaust gasses which allows the computer to adjust the air/fuel mixture for proper power and fuel economy.

That being said, you'd be ok driving it till next week without fixing it. You'll notice poorer performance and reduced fuel economy, but the engine wont blow up or seize or anything. Try sticking the o2 sensor back in and reattach it, maybe its not broken at all, besides the fact that it doesnt stay in the hole. If the cat and the sensor and everything are all rusted out you might be outa luck though.

Yeah, but keep your windows cracked. If you get drowsy, stop and get out, FAST.

Your solution: JB muffler weld. Stick that sensor back up there with two-part muffler epoxy and fiberglass. the cat converter will cost plenty, and this will work for a while, if the sensor didn't get broken bouncing off the pavement.

Yeah, I figured it was an O2 sensor of some sort.

Btw, how much HP did I gain with the decreased backpressure "mod"? ;):p

You probably lost HP. Without the O2 sensor the computer went into open loup, decreasing both your HP and your MPG in most cases.

Just buy a new cat. They are not that much. Hell, I am pretty sure they have an 8 year warrany from the manufacturer mandated by the government. The ones for my truck were $300 but that was for high flow high perforamce ones from Jegs.

If you tell me your car, I will try to find one for ya.

<edit>
Here ya go. High flowers from MagnaFlow. About $100. You would also need a bung to weld in the O2 sensor, as most engines have them in the downpipes at the colector, not the cat.

Magnaflow @ jegs.com
Bung for $8

I'll take you up on that offer then.
1995 Nissan Sentra GXE (1.6 liter engine).

Well, the mechanic plugged the hole with a large bolt... welded it shut.
He says this should last me until my next problem with the cat.
also to ignore the O2 sensor.. this is only the secondary one (my engine light is not on anyway).
