If I eat any solid food in the first two hours after I wake up I get a gag reflex on almost every bite, even if I feel hungry. Is this normal? For the last year I have been making protein shakes in the morning, which are much easier to consume. I usually just chug them while keeping my stomach tense to avoid a gag reflex.

I could understand if I wasn't used to eating breakfast, but I have been eating breakfast for at least 6 years now. It seems that if I wait an hour or two, I can eat a ton of food without any problems though.

Likewise, after I eat, I have to burp a ton (this happens on just about every meal). Is this just due to having a high protein diet?

come on now, are you really wondering if this is normal? :p

but i have no clue what is going on, i've never had that problem. my breakfast typically consists of a protein shake and i'll usually put a slice of cheese and a piece of lunch meat on a piece of bread while i'm making my sandwiches to bring into work for lunch.

i notice that when i eat fast i tend to burp more (or almost like a mix between hiccup and burp) and I tend to eat fast at most of my meals.

well.. I know alot of people don't eat breakfast. I was wondering if this was the reason why... It only seems to affect me in the first hour or so.. after that I can eat like a horse.

Problems like this can be a sign of GERD, IBS, or other treatable gastroenterological disorders. Not sure if you feel a burning heartburn sensation. GERD and problems with your LES can become more prominent at night and give you uncomfortable to sick feelings in the morning. When you lay down acids in your stomach rise into your esaphogus which can cause irritation and discomfort.

You really should see a physician about this and maybe ask for a gastroenterologist consult. This, as you may be aware, is not a normal behavior. Most people can wake up and eat whatever they want without feeling nauseous. I would get checked out about this. It could be a minor problem requiring minimal medication, or it may require a surgical intervention such as a fundiplication for severe GERD. Either way, it's worth at least a quick talk to your family doctor and possibly a specialist.

Some people just don't like to eat after waking up. It isn't a problem, just go slowly!

I have to force myself to eat breakfast, only because I know I need the nutrition in the morning. And sometimes the thought of eating right after waking up makes me a little gag a little. Start with something liquid like a big glass of water and a smoothie.

Tada! All morning eating problems solved :) No, really though, if you can't eat food in the morning, this is a good option.

I'm never hungry in the morning either. I'm just so damn miserable at having to be up as this ungodly hour.

I wake up, get dressed, go work out, then come home and eat. I'm not hungry right when I wake up, and I used to have that problem where I would have to choke down breakfast. Now, after my workout, I'm good and hungry, so it works out great for me.
