I have a display problem on my 2K box

Ok. I was installing a new screensaver on my pc. It was one that was an exe file.

Since then when I go right-click (desktop) > properties and click on the screensaver tab I get the following error:

An error occurred while Windows was working with the Control Panel file C:\Windows\System\Desk.cpl.

I did go to a different 2K pc and copied the file back into my system and that didn't cure anything. I tried google and I found this:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=217752

Is there any other way to resolve this issue? This is my work pc and I'd rather not mess with the video drivers....

Thanks for any help you can provide......

Have you tried using the System File Checker (SFC)?
To run, go to:
START \ RUN and type sfc /scannow

Make sure to have the CD ready (if there is no i386 directory on the HD).

Ok I don't have the cd. I do have the I386 folder but when I ran the utility it kept asking for my cd. I had to hit cancel a bunch of times. Anything else to try?

I had the very same problem.

For me, it was a sort of convoluted solution of removing the screensavers from the directory they get installed into.

That solved it. Desk.cpl didn't give me errors.

Gentle

P.S. Which screensaver was it?

Just direct (browse) to the i386 directory on your HD instead of the CD.

Thanks for your help guys. I got it fixed. I did a search for all files created that day around the time I installed the screensaver. There were 2 files that I blew away and it took care of it.
