I have a computer that is getting stuck at 'Configuring Windows Update' on startup

I haven't had it plugged for 8 months. Set everything up last weekend and it works fine. But, after downloading and installing Windows Updates, it gets stuck after restart at the configuration stage at 12%. After 3 attempts (which takes 3 hours total) it regresses back and boots up normally.

How can I resolve this issue? Is it possible to download the windows updates manually and install them? Not sure how successful this will be because it does download and install successfully, it's just that it does not configure successfully.

What OS are you running?

Given you haven't used the thing for 8 mos, I assume you have tons of patches to install.

Are you saying when you reboot after downloading the patches AND SYSTEM REBOOTS, configuration never moves beyond 12% even after three hours?

I have seen that before. You may have to boot to a Windows 7 DVD or thumb drive if memory serves you can't get in safe mode and access the repair tools. In there you can restore it to before the updates. Then do your updates a few at a time. That may do the trick as there are some updates that get out of whack to put it in simple terms if too many are done at once.

I used the tool I linked him to on a colleague's system having the same problem.....it worked. Can't guarantee it will for him, but sure worth a try.

I just re-installed Win7 on my wife's laptop from a 2010ish install disk and had the same issue. It took 4 or 5 reboots, but it finally did chug through all the updates with full success. With each round it would get a bit further through, though if yours is consistently stuck at the same patch, it may be borked.

I have Windows 7, SP1. I was actively using it until October when I got a laptop. Now I am back to using it.

Hi, Dari.

I C U R not on at the moment. My guess might be you R running W7.....but not sure. Anyhow, no need to wait to find out, download this....the version compatible with yr OS:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/What-is-the-System-Update-Readiness-Tool

Report back.

Thanks for the link. Last night I downloaded and installed that. Now, how do I proceed with all the other WUs? Should I choose all of them to download and install or do it partially? If the latter, which?

EDIT: It worked. Thanks everyone for your help. Much better than putting in a ticket.

Hi,

Only just caught this. Happy you got the MS utility. Re which hotfixes U should get, nobody can say but you.

Cept for such as Bing, I usually just get all of them. Saves time. But that's me.

Maybe you can just get the critical ones?
