A lot of people with 8xAGP motherboards and 8xAGP video cards have to revert back to AGP 4x to get system stability. Also the statement about if you dont have a 2 gig plus processor you shouldnt upgrade is completely not true. I've been processor limited several times with my systems and the thing is you will get higher resolutions and more eyecandy for free to a point. For example you might not get a lot more frames then you currently get with the card you have but you will be able to play at higher resolutions with things like AA and AF. I've got to say after using AA and AF I dont think I could play without them. I guess I better upgrade again when half life 2 and doom3 come out:).

Yeah, video cards, it seems, are the most turned over component on the system (for gamers. anyway). The upgrade strategy should keep that in mind. I tend to think pay less, upgrade more but I did break from that philosophy on my last purchase (9700Pro). Just wanted a few days of me>you... the heady days of 3 months ago.

It's from Tom's so take it as such, but I found it interesting that the G4 440MX 8x had a significant boost over the G4 440MX in most tests. Only 4fps in UT2K3 but as high as almost 20fps in JKII, and handle it easily in 3Dmock as well. So did the core/mem speeds change along with the 8x or is the performance boost due to 8x? link
