I have between $500-700. I don't need a separate sound card cause I'm tone deaf anyways (on-board is fine with me). Already have a monitor, mouse, speakers, and keyboard. Will need everything else. Gonna be using mostly for gaming. Thanks.

Take a look at this, someone here just put together this rig, and I must say for that price range it would be tough to beat this setup.

Opteron144 at
2x512 Corsair Value
x800GTO Fireblade
Antec Super Lanboy
160GB SATA
fortron 400w

Opteron144 $150
2x512 corsair $86
X800GTO $165
Antec lanboy $86
160gb $65
EPoX EP-9NPA+ $94
foxtron 400w $66

= $712

are those the right components that u were talking earlier? it's been so long since i've built a comp that i'm completely out of the loop and have no clue if any of these components are exactly what you're talking about.

also, if anyone else have suggestions, plz let me know. $700 is gonna be a lot for me and i wanna get the most out of my money. last thing is if I really need the foxtron psu and antec case? can i just get some generic case and psu?

That system was also based on two BF deals, the Super Lanboy and the 160gb for something like $20 each. Try looking around at local stores for the best deals on cases and hard drives, especially in places like Best Buy and Circuit City for HD's, and Fry's for cases. You don't want to pay the 15-20 bucks shipping for a case.

I've had bad experiences with Directron, try to find some of those parts at NewEgg or a different supplier. I even prefer tigerdirect.com to them.

And that's not the PSU, that one's not gonna cut it...this one is:

Don't scrimp on the PSU. The case, eh, that's up to you. Antec and Coolermaster are two good companies you can get a fairly low priced case from.

Yea prolly good idea to buy comp case from compusa or somewhere with a good deal. Because shipping it will take 2 weeks :p

i would go with the second build if you're a newb. no point in testing out your OCing skills on an opteron if it's your first time. plus, the 3200+ is a pretty good cpu. and the 6800GS owns the x800gto

First of all, be careful what you get from pricewatch.com. They link to a lot of seedy vendors that will rip you off in a flash.

$163 Athlon 64 3200+ "Venice"
$95 Windows XP Home OEM SP2
$78 Epox EP-9NPAJ
$58 WD 80GB SATA HDD
$44 400W Fortron Source PSU
$42 NEC ND-3550A
$76 1GB PC3200 DDR SDRAM (512MBx2)
$27 case/PSU combo
$11 3.5" FDD
$10 56K v.92 PCI modem

That leaves you with $96 to get a nice video card. If you need to cut down the price, or make room in your budget for some other component, you can get 512MB RAM and upgrade later, or maybe just use the combo PSU for a little while before getting a decent Fortron Source unit. The floppy drive and modem aren't absolutely necessary, either.
