i have $50 for a game, what should i get?

It depends. What type of games do you like?

Strategy(starcraft/C&C)? Fast action shooter (quake, UT)? Strategic\open ended shooter (farcry) Realistic shooters (tom clancy), MMORPG (WoW), sports (madden), etc

Good single player or multiplayer?

I thought there was a new Need for Speed coming out soon too...could be wrong though.
 
Yeah, I'd wait till NFS:Most Wanted hits the shelves. Sounds like that would be more up your alley than anything else right now. Suppose to be out in a couple weeks.
 
I think I can save you some money. I liked Halo quite a bit. But the sci-fi shooter game I love the most is Aliens Vs. Predator 2. You could probably get the gold edition with the Primal expansion pack for under $20.
 
Taste for games is very idiosyncratic.

Best thing for you to do is download the demos of prospective games you might buy. See for yourself what you like and what plays well on your system.

I'd start with demos for FEAR, BF2, and Call of Duty2.

-Killzone (at least a rentage)
-Gran Turismo 4

And I doubt you have a GC.

But those are some games you could check out. Most are under $50 too.
