Well my books for school were a little lighter priced than expected so i figured i pump the extra to my pc. i currently have the following

Celeron 566@850
Abit BM6
256 MB PC 133 SDRAM
Ati Radeon
2 80 gig Seagate Cuda IV

I also have an enlight 300w power supply

I was thinking about upgrading the proc, mb, and memory. Probably going with an athlon xp due to the budget. Not sure what mobo i should go with though any suggestions. do you if i do go with an athlon xp i need get new power supply?

Thanks

First i was thinking athlon xp, but then i saw your power supply. If you pick up an 1800+ for 71, an ECS K7S5A for 53, and tag on around 60 bucks for a psu (i'm not researching THAT deep into it, check it out on newegg, should float around this anyways), and well, 66 bucks for Crucial ddr, that equals to 250 BEFORE TAXES AND SHIPPING. I'd say save up a little more cash, then you'd be set. You might be able to make it through with some used stuff off the FS/T forum though.

Well then feel free to subsitute whatever you want in for the CPU, motherboard, or the ram. Depending on what you do, make that choice.

Well, here is my 2 cents.

Go for the ECSK7S5A and the proc (or a 1900+), keep the memory for now, and use the rest for a ATI 7500 or 9000 (maybe even an 8500, for the money they are killer). Best bang for the buck overall. The end result is nicely balenced.

Epox 8K5A2 - $86 @ Mwave
Athlon XP 1600+ - $50 @ Newegg
256mb True Samsung PC2700 - $64
Taisol CGK760092 Copper Insert HSF - $15

Total : $215

Another side benefit of this setup is the ability to crank your 1600+ up to a 166mhz (333mhz DDR) FSB to go along with the 166mhz (333mhz) DDR, and be running the speed of a much more expensive XP 2100+, but with a faster FSB. Even if you choose not to do this, these components will be a significant performance increase over what you have now. Along with the faster performance, you will also get some nice goodies like 6 USB 2.0 ports and decent onboard sound. Your Enlight 300W PSU should be fine for that setup, and your Radeon and Cuda's will work flawlessly on that board.

🙂

Also, if you could go a little over your budget of $250, you could get a 512mb stick of Samsung PC2700 for $126 instead of the 256mb stick. This would bring your total to $277. It's about $25 more than you want to spend, but the extra memory would nice if you can swing it. 🙂

Don't listen to them... that 300W PS will be more than adequate. My entire system below is running on a GENERIC 300W PS and I haven't had any problems.

Just as long as your power supply has enough amperage to deliver to the CPU, you should look at Insane3D system offer.

Mobo ECS K7S5A $53
cpu XP 1600 $55
vid card Radeon 8500 LE $87
RAM Crucial 256mb pc2100 DDR $67

$262 from Newegg

I strongly suggest you keep that power supply. 300 watts is perfect for what you have.
