I did not know if this should go under networking or software for windows.
I have virtualbox running Windows8.1 on 1 and pfSense on 2.
I have pfSense LAN as 10.1.1.1 without dhcp.
I have my network adapter in W8.1 set up with the gateway as 10.1.1.1
What network setting should I have LAN in pfSense set up as in Virtualbox? I currently have it set as NAT.
on the 8.1 machine I have tried NAT,Internal network, generic. I am unable to log into pfSense. What setting should I be using?

Wont Bridged bypass the pfSense virtual machine(set to 192.168.1.46 to my network)?

I don't think so. Bridge mode gives it a unique IP address which can then be used as the pfsense server.

Using NAT makes it use the host IP settings and NAT to decide if packets should go to the host or the guest. You'll never see the pfsense server on the local network this way.

Here's a tutorial for pentesting using pfsense, and they also set the pfsense VM with Bridged adapter.

Check that your AV software isn't getting in the way. I had a very similar problem with Kaspersky and VMWare Player software.

BTW Player is so much better than Virtual Box.
