Simple question to reply back with: What is the name of the organization you donate the proceeds to, and what percentage of those proceeds are actually used to help blind children rather than are used for administrative costs?

"Yes, you already said your company is giving 100% of the proceeds. Do you realize that there are many charities that manage to eat as much as 80% of what's donated to them in the form of 'administrative costs'?" "Thanks, but I love donating my money where I know it'll make a difference."
 
Places around here do that a lot. They go as far to having it part of the ATM think at checkout. Petsmart and Petco in my area both do it, and every damn time I go in they ask while you're paying "Would you like to donate a dollar to the March of Dimes today?"

I agree, though in some circumstances I have also done a drive where we collected rice and beans and took literally an entire pickup truck full over the border and handed them out. It was really cool to actually be able to see the people you are helping. Then after that we built houses, I miss that trip this last year when they called it off for border security (nuevo progresso area).

I agree, I am starting to have doubts. If we do get a "cure" or a decent treatment (I think this is what the research is focussed on for all diseases), we will probably get charged up the ass and all that money people gave away won't help them 🙁

I made a pact a while ago that I would donate time instead of money. As soon as I am financially able, I plan on supporting Habitat for Humanity and similar charities. H4H is by far the most fun I've had with many of my old friends.

How bout a simple no thanks. You do realize the people who are asking you this are being forced to by their employers. They probably dislike asking you just as much as you dislike it. Its a formality, say no thanks and get on with your day. If they badger you about it then you can bust out something else.


Why look for unneccessary drama though?

I've never had that happen. Are you talking fast-food, or places where you actually sit down and eat. I probably wouldn't return to a sit-down restaurant if someone asked me for a donation there.

If the young would follow the Republican moral agenda and remain masters of their domain then they wouldn't go blind so if it happens again just tell her to tell the kids to remain masters of their own domain and God wouldn't punish them.

It seems it's always the poorer people who donate, though....college students and working-class. Obviously there are exceptions, but a friend of mine who worked in food service said his least favorite customers were the upper-middle women, because they NEVER tipped.

I saw a graph of charitable giving in Newsweek recently... it was a graph of charitable giving as a percentage of total assets (in groupings by income), which I thought was strange... charitable giving as a percentage of income would make more sense, I think. Anyway, the lowest income was the lowest percentage, but then the bracket from 75k to 100k was actually the highest percentage. Maybe those are the people who have nice jobs but still live paycheck to paycheck so they have very little assets? I don't know. The rest of the graph looked like a reverse bell curve, with giving dropping as income increased and then rising again until the $10 million+ bracket which was the second highest.

Yeah I'm really not sure where I was going with that...
 
I hate when they do that...I usually just say No and move on.

Haven't they made a lot of progress though? I thought cancer was a lot more treatable now, especially if they catch it early.
