I hate when stores do this

Just came back from Hollywood Video, went to rent a couple of movies.
When I finally got to the checkout counter the girl tells me that they have a new program. For an additional $.25 per dvd it's insured against damage. I know it's only a quarter but I have never damaged a dvd so I was going to say no. Then she loudly declares that this month all proceeds from the program are going to help blind kids or something like that. All people on the line are staring at me, like who's the guy who can't spare a quarter to help blind kids! So I caved in like the pvssy I am and paid the fifty cents.

Now I don't care about the fifty cents, but I don't like when they try to pressure you in to doing something with charity. If I wanna do it I will, if I don't I won't.

But I did. :(

"I donate a percentage of my paycheck through work, thank you but no."

Even if it's not true.

Whenever I get asked to donate money when I'm in a checkout line I simply tell them that I am coherant and responsible enough to donate my hard earned money to whomever I please on my own behalf and would you please complete my order so I can go grill and get drunk.

I should not have to give an excuse!

That's funny, I saw this title and Holywood Video was the first place I thought of. Was there just last night.

Personally, I just say no, without the excuse. But if you're caving to what random people might think of you then you may need the excuse to stay strong. Plus the people in line probably wouldn't have cared either way.

Yeah, I hate going to stores on weekends because they always have the people outside soliciting donations. I understand that people are more willing to donate when it's right there in front of them, but they make you feel guilty if you don't donate, even if you donate elsewhere. And it REALLY annoys me when it's not even a charity, it's just the local kids raising money for their softball team/band/cheerleading squad/whatever. I live in a pretty wealthy area, but I'm not wealthy. Most of the people around here can (or should be able to) afford to pay for their own kids to go to Florida for a band vacation or softball "spring training." And even if you can't, hit up your relatives and people you know for money for your kids, leave me alone!

I would say; "25 cents!! Looord that's a lot of money! How 'bout I give 7 cents and you let me smell your name tag?"

reminds me of a story... I was with my buddy in Seattle (who has leukemia and is slowly beating it) when a bum comes up and asked us if we had money so he could eat. My friend turns to him and says "you got money for my cancer treatment?" and even the bum felt bad after that. Whoudathunk.

The company I work for does this and I can't stand it. At least 5 times a year we get "donation boxes"(box 'o food) or sell the Children's Miricle Network donation balloons at the checkout. As if the massive amount of signs we put up were not enough, they make our cahiers ask every person that comes through the line if they would like to buy one and what it's for. Sure it's for a good cause, but noone wants to feel like a cheapass when they say no to helping crippled kids in front of 10 other customers/employees.

Wallgreens did that to me once for Cancer research. I've had family members die of cancer (I think most people have) so I caved but it was a cheap shot. I have no income and so I donated thanks to my student loans.

I do recall being told that whichever store sells the most of those things, its manager receives some kind of bonus or vacation or something, hence his/her incentive to push for sales of them. My manager when I worked at Kmart (part time cashier) pushed for sales of the CMN things just as hard as he pushed for sales of those damn extended warranty things, the latter of which he's obviously interested in, because that represents what likely amounts to free revenue. Once the product breaks, how many people really are going to 1) Remember that they even bought the extended warranty, 2) Know where they put it, and 3) Be willing to go through the trouble of convincing the company to make good on their offer?

I've never had that happen. Are you talking fast-food, or places where you actually sit down and eat. I probably wouldn't return to a sit-down restaurant if someone asked me for a donation there.

I'm not giving money to make a corporations charitable contributions look better. If I want to give money I can do it myself. When is the last time you saw a donation thing where the store matched your donation?
