This reminds me of an episode of A Different World when some racist college kids said, after a game, "I hate it when they butcher the anthem".

What you are saying is racist, plain and simple. I don't see any complaints when country singers add a ridiculous twang to the anthem

I think what you are saying is racist for assuming that by saying R&B singers, he meant a specific race. Wasn't the example given Mariah Carey?

The only time I've EVER seen someone complain about a white woman singing the national anthem, it was Rosanne Bar, and she wasn't really singing. The complaint is always about black women singing the anthem in a R&B style, which is a musical genre created and dominated by black people. I don't see a single complaint about the national anthem being sung with a country twang.

It's pretty obvious. When someone specifically says that they hate when the anthem is sung R&B, it's subconscious racism at its finest.

The whole politically correct "nothing is racist wahh you're playing the race card wahh" angle is getting old.

Does anyone else get really annoyed when people add their personal "style" to the anthem? It seems to happen most often with R&B-esque singers like the one for the colts/saints game last night. Not only is it annoying, and draws the song out 3x as long as it should be, I think its very disrespectful to add your own "flair" the the song. Sing the anthem the way it was written!

Agree 100%

I especially hate it when their style includes forgetting words.

I just hate it when they use that stupid fluctuation of the voice where it almost sounds like they were trained by yodelers.
The fluctuations (vibrato) of voices/instruments is meant to hide any imperfections in pitch. It gives unsteady/cold/harsh notes from a bad singer/instrument a warm and live feeling. Basically it is a crutch taught to people who can't keep a note steady and in tune with the other instruments. If you use that technique, you sound like you are covering up your flaws.

Yet, so many people think that is the ideal way to sing.

wat? vibrato "should" have nothing to do with pitch. if the pitch changes, you're doing it wrong.

That was THE worst national anthem singing ever. Worse then Rosanne.

while I don't believe it was the worst, I'm just going to have to basically agree with ya here.
Tonight's was straight up TERRIBLE. I think it was like... 3x as long. And what was up with the re-re-remix at the end? ugh

If the song is going to be sung instead of instrumental, then dammit, sing it like it should be sung.

Damn you. You stretched out my window

Meh. I wouldn't say its disrespectful, but it can be very annoying. Of course, I think our tradition of singing the national anthem at sporting events is silly anyway.

A lot of ........ Uhhhhhh & Ohhh, Ohhhhhhhhs
Wah Wha Wha WHahhhhhhhh!

SHUTUP Already!

I agree, it's crap. Just sing the song!
They have the voice, it's just they have too much JIVE/R&B to sing a straight song. Stick to Jazz and Rap.

Give them a Nursery Rhyme to sing like Jack be Nimble, and it would end up being 5min too long

The OP is missing the bigger picture. Our national anthem sucks and is damn near un-singable. People stylize it in attempt to render it singable. We need a better anthem that can be sung by the masses. I propose Touch Me Now by Samantha Fox.
