I hate when people "style" the national anthem

Does anyone else get really annoyed when people add their personal "style" to the anthem? It seems to happen most often with R&B-esque singers like the one for the colts/saints game last night. Not only is it annoying, and draws the song out 3x as long as it should be, I think its very disrespectful to add your own "flair" the the song. Sing the anthem the way it was written!

When a thread is this old, just start a new one and link to the old, if you must.

I like how we sing it the UC style..

:music:Oh say can UC!
...
And the rockets (all the students yell BLUEeeee)
And the home of the.... (everyone screams BEARSsssss) :music:

I'm surprised UCLA didn't have this. I almost sang it UC style during my friend's graduation. I think I would've stuck out like a sore thumb there =P

yeah. personally i think it disrespectful.

they usually butcher the song.when they scan the audience you can see people looking at each other like WTF?

I wholeheartedly agree. It's downright enraging. I find it disgustingly disrespectful and dishonoring.

I hate it too. Maya Rudolph did a funny bit on SNL about it.

but some R&B singers can really do it well. I've always thought that only R&B singers are allowed to sing it (only the ones who can do it cleanly, and add a little flair when needed, but not too flashy).

One rendition that really sent chills down my spine was when Boyz II Men did it at one of the NBA All Star games around the 90s... That was sooo awesome, and quite possibly the best version of the anthem i've ever heard.

EDIT: ooo I forgot about the Whitney Houston superbowl one. That was really good too.

Given that the melody is from a old English bar-drinking song, I don't mind people deviating a bit from the notation...that said, it has to be tasteful. Anytime a performer makes the performance more about themselves than about the music, it's not good, in my opinion. True for all music, but especially national anthems.

Boyz II Men probably harmonized. That's ok. If you listen to, say, a band playing it, there is plenty of harmony. I just hate when they go "Mariah Carey" on it. I don't know the music term, but if you've ever heard Mariah Carey sing, you know what I mean.

Very much so. In fact, I think it's disrespectful to the flag and our nation. Just like when Rosanne sung it.

Just sing it the way it is meant to be sung.

I agree...the national anthem is one song doesn't need to be reinterpreted.

Most of the time it's attention-whoring, trying to do vocal gymnastics at the expense of the song's integrity.

I used to watch her show and liked her comedy. The night she sang that garbage and totally shat all over the anthem, I quit watching her show, etc. Yeah, like she cares, but it's a big deal to me.

Nearly everyone "oversings" today. They go all over the place with the notes as a way to cover up the fact they have no vocal control. You can blame 90's pop for bringing about that trend :|

The rendition last night SUCKED.. I wish the choir would have sang it instead of whoever that was singing the lead.

I don't mind as long as they do it very cleanly. Too many try too hard at it and end up making it miserable. It's a simple song. Sing it simply in any "style" and it'll be fine.

Normally it doesn't bother me, but there is a line. Forgetting the words, or generally being an ass is a whole different story.. Harmonizing, or adding personal flair in a respectful way is ok with me.

It's today's 'me' attitude. "Look and how many runs I can do, and finish on a note I'm not supposed to and still be in key!!". It's horrible.

Whitney's rendition is widely regarded as one of the best, ever.
